Integrated Library System Programmer

 

Brief description of duties:

Reporting to the Head of Library Systems, The University at Albany
Libraries seek a service-oriented, creative, collaborative, and
energetic individual to support the Libraries' Ex Libris ALEPH 500
integrated library system.  Working in a team environment, the
successful candidate will provide technical support for functional
aspects of the system, including overseeing daily operations and
services; installing and implementing module releases and system
enhancements; writing custom scripts and SQL queries as required;
developing and running batch jobs; creating, revising or performing data
loads; extracting records and generating reports based on specific
needs; interacting with other enterprise-wide systems; managing the
ALEPH configuration tables; devising and documenting procedures;
enhancing staff and user interfaces to the system; and providing
training to library staff.  The incumbent is expected to maintain a
broad and detailed mastery of ALEPH and other core library systems and
applications, as well as operations of library functional units.
Finalists will be asked to submit official transcripts and to present on
a specific topic to all library personnel.

 

Qualifications:

 

Minimum: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Science,
Management Information Systems, or related field or the equivalent
combination of education and experience; the degree must be from a
college or university accredited by a U. S. Department of Education or
internationally recognized accrediting organization;  Minimum one year,
full-time library work experience; Experience with UNIX operating
systems, including UNIX commands, editors (e.g. vi, emacs, Pico) and
shell scripting; Technical skills and experience with software
applications such as Oracle SQL client, Telnet/SSH applications (e.g.
Putty and SFTP) and XML; Extensive knowledge of Perl / PHP programming;
Demonstrated understanding of client / server infrastructure; Strong
analytical, troubleshooting, and problem solving skills;  Strong
oral/written communication skills and the ability to interact
professionally with a diverse  group of clients and staff of all levels
of computer knowledge; Proven ability to prioritize tasks; to work both
independently and as part of a team;  Capable of building consensus and
communicating effectively with librarians and staff members to
collaboratively design and offer innovative, integrated digital library
services to our patrons.

 

Preferred:  Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited
library / information science program; Knowledge and experience in
large-scale library systems, preferably the Ex Libris ALEPH system;
Understanding of library operations and electronic resource management;
Familiarity with the MARC record format; Knowledge of Unicode and other
library metadata standards, such as METS, MODS, EAD; Knowledge and / or
experience with the following digital library technologies: OpenURL
(Z39.88), Z39.50, SRU/W, metasearch;  Experience with Oracle relational
databases and using SQL for data extraction and report generation; and,
familiarity with Web 2.0 social networking technologies.
