This project, funded by a major grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), is implementing an emerging model for making library materials more easily findable, the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR). Building on earlier Variations projects at Indiana University, the project will adapt the FRBR data model to improve retrieval of music recordings and scores. An existing algorithm for "FRBRizing" records from the online library catalog will be improved and run against nearly 200,000 existing records to create a searchable database. The project will also create new web-based search and cataloging tools. DUTIES: Working as part of a small software development team for the Variations digital music library system, maintains and improves the algorithm for converting library catalog records to a FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) model; re-architects the search subsystem within Variations to make it separable and FRBR-based; implements web-based user interfaces for the new search and cataloging features; participates in full software life cycle activities: requirements, design, implementation, testing, debugging, maintenance, and support; communicates effectively with the larger team, which includes usability and user interface design personnel and metadata specialists; and documents work and trains users as needed. QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field and one to three years experience in systems analysis and programming of complex software systems, including work in a full-featured object-oriented programming language such as Java or C++, required. Equivalent education and experience may be considered. Experience in Java web application, web services development, and XML required. Must have some familiarity with Unix and Perl. Ability to interact professionally with faculty, librarians, and technical staff required. Good customer service and communication skills required. Master's degree preferred. Experience with Flash, AJAX, or other highly interactive web user interface development preferred. Experience with library systems and data helpful.
