I'm not sure *the extent* to which it's used (data which are necessarily going to be messy and partially driven by how prevalent browse vs search are in the interface), and I certainly don't know what's going through people's heads when they choose to use it (on those occasions when they make a conscious choice to use browse in addition to/instead of search). My attempts to find stuff in the research literature failed me; if anyone has other pointers, I'd love to read them! (If only there was a real librarian around to help poor little me...) -Bill-
