In case anyone is tracking the status of the Open Publication Distribution System (OPDS), v1.0 of the specification was just released yesterday [1]. OPDS is essentially a pattern for sharing ebook URLs, and the metadata associated with them, using Atom. Hadrien Gardeur has a nice list of the changes between v0.9 and v1.0 if you took a look before, which is included below. If you are curious, and find examples more useful than specifications, take a look at the implementations at the Internet Archive [2], FeedBooks [3], the Pragmatic Programmers [4], or an experimental view on arXiv [5]. //Ed [1] http://opds-spec.org/blog/2010/08/29/opds-catalogs-v1/ [2] http://bookserver.archive.org/catalog/ [3] http://www.feedbooks.com/catalog.atom [4] http://pragprog.com/magazines.opds [5] http://arxiv-opds.heroku.com/ [1] http://opds-spec.org/blog/2010/08/29/opds-catalogs-v1/ ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Hadrien Gardeur <[log in to unmask]> Date: Mon, Aug 30, 2010 at 11:47 AM Subject: Re: [openpub] opds v1 release To: [log in to unmask] Key changes between 0.9 and 1.0: Removed references to indirect acquisition, we'll continue discussions about this outside of the core spec (in an info doc) The spec is now more generic to open the door to other electronic content in the future (audio/video, comics etc.) New rel value for Open Access (http://opds-spec.org/acquisition/open-access) Modifications for artwork relations (http://opds-spec.org/specs/opds-catalog-1-0-20100830/#Artwork_Relations) Modified the definitions and groupes feed-level relations into: sorting relations, popular relation, previously acquired relations and crawlable feed relation "Publications in a format using Digital Rights Management SHOULD use a different value for the type attribute of the Acquisition Link than the same format without Digital Rights Management." More spec language about the relationship between summary/content: http://opds-spec.org/specs/opds-catalog-1-0-20100830/#Summary_and_Content Relax NG schema: http://opds-spec.org/specs/opds-catalog-1-0-20100830/#Appendix_B._RELAX_NG_Compact_Schema Overall, these are rather minor modifications and shouldn't require too much work to support them.
