Gene,

We're not evaluating cloud vendors yet.

We're closely watching the GSA Cloud procurement project, where Cloud vendors are pre-vetted against Federal security guidelines:

http://www.gsa.gov/portal/content/190333

https://info.apps.gov/

The first service has been approved, with more to follow.

Two LC projects are testing the waters using an EC2 instance as a dropbox for content transfers.

Trevor,

1. Is LC also meeting with cloud storage vendors? It would be interesting to see if there are advantages to using cloud storage, cost, availability, etc... It would be nice to see a comparison sheet with advantages/disadvantages of cloud versus local storage. What forum will you be using to have vendor meetings? Any thought of including interested IWG members in the meetings?

3. The freeform method was good to gather information but it would be helpful to drill down on questions on what is being used or what each group feels important in their digitization infrastructure. This should help quantify specific information on each topic.

Look forward to the meeting today.

Thanks,

Gene

Just a quick reminder about the call today at 1pm. After we chat a little about the workshops and the meeting, as I see it, these are the next three things to talk through.

1. Next steps with our document.
I and a few of the team members can share it at LC's meeting with storage vendors in the September. What do we want to have done for this to share it with them?

2. Decision tree?
On an earlier call, Micah had volunteered to draft up a decision tree dealing with some of the issues that emerged from the questionnaire. We got requests for something like that at the workshop. Micah, is there any more work you want to see before you take a crack at drafting a decision tree?

3. Should we do a more structured survey of the full membership?
Do we want to create a more targeted survey of the membership based off of some of the issues that emerged in the questionnaire. Think radio buttons and numerical answers. Do we want this kind of information about some of our questions? If so, which questions? I'm willing to draft a short survey and share it with the list for input. Does that sound useful?

Hello everyone,

We had a very fruitful workshop around our document last week at the partner meeting. During the workshop, attendees talked about different sections and added comment and thoughts directly to the document. So it will need more work to smooth out the additions. It would be great if everyone could take a look before our call next week. It can be found on google docs here:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KlyqO0VfsY6twL6d9MUHxIiVZUQTh2XihtI-v12Fg0g/edit?authkey=CI2RoKcO&hl=en_US

Please feel free to add information, comment, edit, etc. Remember, it is a reflection of solutions that current working group members are using. We hope sharing our experiences will help others in making decisions about digital preservation infrastructure. The information was digested from the answers to questions found on the wiki:

As a reminder, the working group wiki can be found here:

http://www.loc.gov/extranet/wiki/osi/ndiip/ndsa/index.php?title=Wednesday

Our next working group phone call will be Thursday, July 28 at 1:00 pm EST. It will be an update on the face to meeting in Wash DC, the workshops, discussing how to improve the document, and our next steps forward. The call in information is:

Call-in number: 866-469-3239
Participant access code: 21408589

I hope you can join us.
