Tim, I think that's worth considering, but I'm not sure how it would play out execution-wise, at least this year. We'd really like to get voting started this week to make sure we have a decent voting period while leaving plenty of time to make arrangements with nominees (granted, your idea is intended to make that less of a problem). I think the possibly bigger problem is that it might mean investing a lot of time and energy in tracking down nominees who aren't going to end up close to the top spot, rather than spending a relatively limited amount of energy to track down three or four people.

Also, I am not sure how much it would change the voting practice of individual voters if we removed names from the ballot. In theory, since it's approval voting, your opinion on a given candidate shouldn't affect how you rank any other candidate, so removing candidates from the list shouldn't affect the outcome. Real life is a little messier than this, of course, but I think it should still hold on the whole, within a certain error tolerance.

Maybe previous keynote committee folks have some feedback on this? Would it be feasible to contact all the nominees before voting? Worthwhile? Community members, what are your thoughts? Would narrowing the field by pre-evaluating candidates for availability affect how you vote? Also, what are our thoughts on how nominees would feel if they are contacted before the voting takes place?
In any case, I am not sure if Tim's idea can be executed this year for logistical reasons, but keynote committee members, let me know if you feel differently.

Before voting begins, can the C4L2012 committee contact each of the nominees
to see if they would be able to attend and speak if voted? It seems
fruitless to vote for a speaker who couldn't even commit to the conference,
and I think if we removed nominees that knew they could not accept our
request may change the voting significantly.
