Dear NDSA Members,

If you are interested in joining the work of the Standards Working Group, contact Andrea ([log in to unmask]) or Jimi ([log in to unmask]) or join the content listserv at:

http://list.digitalpreservation.gov/SCRIPTS/WA-DIGITAL.EXE?SUBED1=NDSA-STANDARDS

The Standards Working Group has been very active this year. Please see the update on their work below.

Standards and Practices
According to the NDSA Standards Working Group listserv subscription information, the Standards group currently has 42 members. The group has a standing monthly WebEx meeting on the first Monday of each month. There have been 8 of these monthly meetings so far. The number of participants in these meetings ranges from 6 to 12.

The chief work of the group so far has been to begin a survey of the digital preservation standards landscape. The goals of this survey are:
* Identify and describe existing digital preservation standards and best practices
* Identify opportunities for collaboration with non-NDSA individuals and organizations who are currently working on digital preservation standards and best practices
* Identify gaps in digital preservation standards and best practices coverage that could be addressed by this working group in future activities
The group has created a Google Docs spreadsheet and has started the survey but work is currently on hiatus as we try to find (or develop) a more user-friendly input tool. At the 2011 NDIIPP Partners' Meeting the group plans to hold a workshop that will have as its outcome a collection of use cases for the survey. These cases would include defining who would use the survey, why they would use it, and what information would be needed. This will be instrumental in scoping the survey as we go forward with the work.
The working group also plans to put together an action team to work with the Educopia Institute to develop an approach for implementing the OAIS Reference Model and the derived Trustworthy Repository Auditing & Certification metrics (TRAC) in a distributed digital preservation (DDP) environment. This work would accomplish the following aims:
* Describe the roles and responsibilities at institutions which are working to replicate and preserve digital information in an organizationally distributed environment;
* Provide a common vocabulary and set of recommendations for trustworthy interoperable systems development; and
* Inform administrative and technical practices between groups that seek to collaboratively preserve digital information using distributed mechanisms.
More information about this proposed work - and the standards survey work - can be found on the NDSA Standards Working Group wiki

Best regards,

Michelle
