TITLE: Software Architect/Developer

An opportunity exists for one or more experienced software architects/developers to work within the team environment of the University of Maryland (UM) Libraries in College Park, the largest university library system in the region and in close proximity to the nation’s capital. RESPONSIBILITIES


The UM Libraries’ Information Technology Division supports the library automation needs of the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions (USMAI). Working within a team environment, the successful candidate(s) will provide broad programming support to the UM Libraries for the design, development, and delivery of Java-based software applications, large-scale digital collections, and web interfaces. The successful candidate(s) will:


- Design and develop tools for managing production workflows, large-scale ingestion, inventory control and preservation of digital collections;


- Select and utilize appropriate software languages, frameworks and platforms for new and existing library projects;


- Provide object-oriented programming for various library initiatives;


- Provide web interface development support for digital collection management systems;


- Research and develop applications to interface with commercial bibliographic systems, acquisition systems, reference and circulation systems;


- Utilize project management tools such as JIRA to record and monitor progress; and


- Lead technical development on some projects.





QUALIFICATIONS


Required:


- Bachelor’s degree in a field related to information sciences, computer sciences and engineering, or information management


- Minimum of three (3) years of programming experience using the Java language


- Experience creating web applications using JSP, HTML, CSS, and Javascript


- Experience with XML, Xpath, and XSLT


- Experience using JDBC to interact with a relational database such as PostgreSQL or MySQL


- Experience using version control software such as Subversion or Git


- Experience using Eclipse integrated development environment


- Excellent interpersonal skills; Excellent written and verbal communications skills

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The UM Libraries' Information Technology Division supports the library automation needs of the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions (USMAI). The Integrated Library Systems (ILS) team is responsible for acquisition of library systems and databases, developing and configuring software, and monitoring and improving performance of library systems. Working in a team environment, the successful candidate will help support library systems and electronic resources, install software, train staff, and create written documentation.
A primary responsibility for this position is managing acquisition of library resources using library systems and applications. The incumbent will act as the coordinator of acquisitions for USMAI campuses and will troubleshoot systems, configure and customize applications, and coordinate with support providers to fix problems.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Required:

. ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library and Information Sciences or related field.
. Experience supporting integrated library systems in one or more of the following areas: acquisitions and serials, bibliographic data, electronic service support . Strong interpersonal/communication skills . Strong analytical, organizational, and planning skills.
. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-based environment . Demonstrated ability to work collegially in an academic and consortium setting.

Preferred:
. Experience providing customer service and technical support for an ILS . Experience developing and supporting library web-based services . Experience working with XML/XSL . Experience working in a UNIX environment . Working knowledge of SQL . Advanced Knowledge of Microsoft Office Products


Position is appointed to Librarian Faculty Ranks as established by the University System of Maryland Board of Regents. Rank at appointment is based on the successful applicant's experience and relevant credentials.
