Hello all. Yesterday was our monthly NDSA Standards working group meeting. I will be putting notes up on the wiki soon but in the meantime here is the WebEx recording: https://issevents.webex.com/issevents/lsr.php?AT=pb&SP=MC&rID=48830237&rKey=1844859f860dff1d

We spoke about the standards survey work and how it relates to Wikipedia. We also talked about better defining the scope of the project by listing the categories of digital preservation "stuff" that we'll be surveying: http://1.usa.gov/nrERwI. One of the things we should all do is take a look at these categories and refine and edit them. So I'm asking that all of you (or at least those of you who are invested in this survey project) take a look at the list and feel free to jump in and edit it.

We also decided at the end of the call that it's time to start doing instead of just talking. To that end, the meeting participants decided to find a page or two already on Wikipedia and start editing it to conform to the fields we generated for the Google Doc that we started with several months ago. For example, I've decided to edit the Wikipedia page for the Broadcast Wave audio file format: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadcast_Wave_Format. Once I've played around with it I will then put a link to it on our NDSA wiki under the "File Formats" entry on our categories list (same link as above: http://1.usa.gov/nrERwI). I will also post a link to it on our group's listserv. If we all try to do this to one or two pages then we can have some strawman examples that we can kick around on the listserv and at our November meeting. So rather than doling out assignments I'm counting on you to self-select a Wikipedia page or two that aligns with your interests and expertise and see what you can do with it. Then we can all start moving this all forward and feel like we're doing something!

So.. sally forth! And I'll do my part by putting up some notes on the wiki in the next few days before I dive into the BWF Wikipedia page!

Best,

Jimi
