University of Minnesota Libraries
Director, Minitex

http://www.minitex.umn.edu/

The University of Minnesota University Libraries seeks visionary, strategic, and creative senior leadership for the Director of Minitex, a regional information and resource sharing organization.  Reporting to the University Librarian, the director provides administrative and programmatic leadership for a robust portfolio of services.  Celebrating its 40th year, Minitex is a joint program of the University of Minnesota Libraries and the Minnesota Office of Higher Education, with additional contracts for services.

Originally established to provide resource sharing from the University to academic and state government libraries within the state, Minitex now encompasses contract services to public and school libraries as well as libraries in North and South Dakota.  Its suite of services includes: discovery and resource sharing (one of the highest volume agencies in the U.S.), a regional courier delivery system, the Electronic Library of Minnesota (licensed content for Minnesota citizens), cooperative reference services, cooperative storage through the Minnesota Library Access Center, brokered digitization services through the Minnesota Digital Library, library staff development programs, and procurement services for myriad library products and services.  A dynamic and responsive organization, Minitex repositions its resources to respond to emergent needs of libraries in the region.  Minitex programmatic funding through appropriations and contracts in FY11 was $8.6 million, with another $13 million in procurement transactions.  Minitex staff total 65, with an additional 13 FTE in student staff.

Minitex is a division of the University Libraries (http://www.lib.umn.edu ). Its organizational relationship enables access to University infrastructure, library collections, and expertise, as well as collaborative program development and outreach services.  Counsel on Minitex services is provided by the Minitex Policy Advisory Council, representing library sectors from across the state and the Dakotas.  Funding sources include legislative appropriation, contracts, and LSTA funding through the Minnesota State Library Agency (Department of Education).  A recent state constitutional amendment (sales tax) provides support for cultural heritage initiatives including plans for digital preservation infrastructure and digital library development.

The University of Minnesota is a forward-looking, comprehensive, and diverse institution located in the center of the vibrant Twin Cities metropolitan area.  The Twin Cities are known for their cultural amenities, such as the Guthrie Theater, Walker Art Center, the Ordway Center for Performing Arts, and for their extensive park and recreational systems.
