TITLE:

Scholarly Communications Librarian

University of North Texas Libraries

 

 

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Scholarly Communications Librarian will lead the UNT Libraries' outreach efforts to faculty in support of scholarly publication innovations and reforms, act as the Libraries' chief resource on copyright compliance, and supervise activities related to library reserves, Open Access efforts, and other local content reproduction and dissemination functions.  The UNT

the creation
of
the
new position
of
Scholarly
Communication
Librarian.  The librarian exercises broad independent judgment and authority under the general direction of the Assistant Dean for Public Services, and with guidance from the Office of the Dean of Libraries.  The librarian will serve on library and faculty committees and work groups.  Duties may also include providing additional public services.

SPECIFIC POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

·       Develop and implement an educational program to increase awareness in the extended UNT community of copyright, Open Access, and other scholarly communication issues.

·        Advise UNT faculty and serve as a library resource on copyright compliance issues related to e-reserves, fair use, and Open Access.  Act as a resource on licensing policies.

·       Serve as a campus advocate for Open Access to UNT scholarly works, speaking and writing about the issues in various UNT and national forums and publications

·       Consult with and advise UNT faculty on publishing agreements, retention of right to deposit materials in the campus repository, and the process of placing materials on print or electronic reserve. 

·       Work in close consultation and cooperation with the Digital Libraries Division, specifically the Institutional Repository Librarian, the Library Liaisons Work Group, the UNT Office of General Counsel, and the Center for Learning Enhancement, Assessment, and Redesign.

·       Monitor national copyright and intellectual property trends and policy issues.

·       Develop and maintain the Libraries’ copyright advisory and reserves websites.

·       Maintain, develop, and revise library policies and procedures related to copyright and reserves.

·       May supervise student workers and/or Graduate Library Assistants.

·       Foster positive relations with faculty, students, and staff and promote the University’s and Libraries’ commitment to diversity.

·       Perform reference services, guest lectures, and serve on Library and University Committees as needed.

·       Be active professionally and contribute to the developments in the field, especially in groups such as SPARC and COAPI (which UNT is a member of).

Minimum qualifications for the position:

·       Education: Candidates with any of the following degrees will be considered: 1) ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information sciences, 2) a Juris Doctor, or 3) other post-baccalaureate degree that has prepared the candidate to be an authority in the area of scholarly communication.

·       Demonstrated knowledge of copyright and other intellectual property issues in the academic environment.

·       Evidence of leadership, entrepreneurship, and initiative.

·       Strong oral and written communication skills.

·       Ability to adjust priorities, take initiative, set goals, manage time wisely, and make quick effective decisions in a fast-paced environment.

·       Aptitude for thinking creatively and developing products and services, such as publications, training materials, workshops, conferences, and other tools relevant to scholarly communications, copyright, and fair use.

·       Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish positive and productive collaborations with faculty.

Desired qualifications for the position:

·       3 years relevant experience, preferably in an academic library environment.

·       Experience in preparing and delivering copyright instruction.

·       Demonstrated proficiency with digital systems and software applications.

·       Demonstrated contribution to the profession with scholarly publications and/or presentations and through contributions to professional organizations.
