**(THREE YEAR FIXED TERM CONTRACT)**  
**The Royal Irish Academy:** The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Rioga na hÉireann is a publicly funded institution established for the promotion of learning in the sciences and humanities throughout Ireland. The Academy was founded by Royal Charter in 1785. Membership is by election and is open to people who have attained distinction in scholarship as evidenced by their published work. At its inception the Academy had 88 members; now there are over 460, divided almost equally between the sciences and the humanities and social sciences. The Academy maintains a network of committees representing specialist disciplines; through these committees it represents Irish scholarship internationally. The Academy's home is Academy House, a historic building in the centre of Dublin, which houses a library of international importance, provides a forum for academic conferences and accommodates the great majority of the Academy's administrative, library and research staff.  
  
**The Digital Repository of Ireland:** The Digital Repository of Ireland is an interactive trusted digital repository for contemporary and historical, social and cultural data held by Irish institutions. DRI works with common data and metadata standards, formats, access rights, and research tools, and it will consolidate and make accessible social sciences, arts and cultural data, collections and audio-visual archives. This is an exciting project with a national mandate and a cross-disciplinary, energetic team.  
  
DRI funded partners are the Royal Irish Academy (RIA, lead institute),
National University of Ireland Maynooth (NUIM), Trinity College Dublin (TCD),
Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), National University of Ireland Galway
(NUIG), and National College of Art and Design (NCAD). DRI is partnering with
cultural institutions such as the National Archives of Ireland and the
National Library of Ireland, and is supported by a network of cultural, public
and social data institutions, and industry partners.

  
DRI brings together leading researchers in the humanities and social sciences,
library services and high-end computing. The DRI is funded through Cycle 5 of
the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions administered by the HEA
and co-funded under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The project
is funded over four years, and started in September 2011. For additional

**The Position:** The Academy is seeking applications for the position of Digital Archivist for the DRI Project. This contract is funded from the DRI grant and will be filled on a three year fixed term contract (full time, five day week). The successful applicant must be in a position to start no later than the 17th September 2012. The Digital Archivist is an important role in the project team; following current and emerging trends, providing guidance and practical advice as well as carrying out hands-on activities in digital preservation, organisation and access. The project office is based in Dawson Street, Dublin 2.  
  
Reporting to the DRI Director, the Digital Archivist will be responsible for:

  * Working closely with the DRI Director and Programme Manager in the day-to-day operation of the DRI project
  * Working with the DRI team to help provide preservation, organisation and access to the digital assets in the DRI repository and in our federated partner organisations
  * Hands-on digital asset preparation, metadata annotation, data ingestion into the DRI repository, data and metadata format shifting
  * Maintaining and developing relationships with partner organisations that are responsible for digital repositories, archives or libraries
  * Following current and emerging trends in media, formats, digitisation, metadata standards, linked data, digital preservation practices, and reporting to the DRI team and partners findings in such matters
  * Interfacing with the DRI infrastructure development team, the DRI Policy Manager and Requirements Analyst, and the DRI Educational Technologist for skills and expertise exchange
  * Assisting in writing grant and funding proposals
  * Any other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience: The successful candidate will be a self-
motivated graduate with an excellent command of English. Candidates must have:

  * A PhD in a relevant area or equivalent work experience
  * Skills and expertise in digital preservation, digital repositories, archives or libraries, metadata, content management and organisation, digital access and access rights
  * Hands-on practical experience of digital asset preparation, metadata annotation, data and metadata format shifting and manipulation, data ingestion
  * Strong oral and written communications skills, with the ability and confidence to engage with project partners and stakeholders clearly and professionally
  * Evidence of strong organisational and self-motivational skills
  * Experience of working in a fast-paced environment and to deadlines
  * Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to operate flexibly as a member of this cross-disciplinary team.
Salary: €40,003 per annum. Public sector pay policy in relation to new
entrants will apply.

  
**Hours: **The normal hours of work are from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Monday to Thursday and Friday, 9.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., with 1 hour for lunch Monday and Friday, and 1¼ hours Tuesday to Thursday inclusive. The Academy reserves the right to alter these working hours from time to time. However, flexibility is required with regard to working occasional evening and weekend hours. Overtime is not paid in respect of excess attendance which, should it arise, is discharged by time off in lieu at times agreed in advance with the Director.  
  
**Leave:** The annual leave entitlement is twenty-six days per annum, pro-rata for shorter periods and part-time working. Entitlement to leave for Public Holidays is in accordance with the terms of the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997.  
  
**Medical:** Staff shall, if required, and at the expense of the Academy, submit to a medical examination by a registered medical practitioner nominated by the Academy and shall authorise such medical practitioner to disclose and to discuss with the Academy the results of the examination and the matters which arise from it so that the Academy can ascertain any matters that they consider might impair a staff member from properly discharging his/her duties.  
  
**Pension**: The successful candidate will be offered the appropriate pension terms prevailing at the time of being offered an appointment. Candidates should be aware, that as announced in Budget 2010, the Government has decided to introduce a new single pension scheme, along with a new retirement age provision, for new recruits to the public service.  
  
Subject to the paragraph above and the rules relating to membership of the
Staff Superannuation Scheme and Spouses' and Children's Contributory Pension
Scheme, pension contributions are payable as follows :

  
**Lump Sum Benefits :** 1.5% of full pay (Note 1)  
Spouses' and Children's Pension 1.5% of full pay (Note 1):

Pension Benefits : 3.5% of pensionable pay.(Note 2)

Note 1 : Full pay is defined as the aggregate of salary and pensionable
allowances

Note 2 : Pensionable pay is defined as full pay less twice the annual maximum
rate of Social Welfare Contributory Old Age Pension payable to a person with
no dependants.

  
  
**Pension-Related Deduction : **This appointment is subject to the pension-related deduction in accordance with the Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest Act 2009.
