Hi Tim, For what you describe, I've typically seen treemaps used (archives<http://vimeo.com/6694353> and file storage <http://www.cs.umd.edu/hcil/treemap-history/index.shtml>). Yet it sounds like you are critical of this approach. Could you say a little more about why and what kind of interaction you would like?
