HathiTrust uses TSM, which dispenses with the notion of full backups,
for our tape backup. The "weekly or monthly full" convention is somewhat
of a vestige of tape environments prone to segmentation, or for pure
convenience of recovery, and in particular, it is antithetical to VTL
environments.

We run nightly incrementals which are replicated to another site (also
on tape). Our tapes are encrypted.

One point worth noting that relates to trustworthy digital preservation:
it is critical to tie the previous-version retention of your backup
system to your fixity check schedule. We do fixity checks no less
frequent than quarterly and we retain previous versions for 6 months. If
a fixity check detects bit rot - hasn't happened, BTW - we have a wide
margin that allows us to retrieve the version of the rotten file that
passed the most recent fixity check.
