The University of Arizona Libraries' Scholarly Publishing and Data Management
Team (SPDM) seeks an assistant librarian to lead the Libraries' efforts and
coordinate best practices in developing a holistic approach to our metadata
practices in support of improving and increasing the discoverability of the
Libraries' local and unique digital collections. The position, in addition to
its core duties with metadata, tracks the Libraries' overall success with
discovery, and maintains the Libraries' discovery strategy. This position will
also provide consulting and support for both Libraries' and campus' metadata
needs, including support for the Libraries' data management support services.
This is a continuing eligible (Assistant) position, and this position is
expected to contribute to the profession at a level appropriate to the
assistant rank.

  
The Scholarly Publishing and Data Management Team provides next-generation
publishing and data management support for the University's faculty,
researchers, and students. SPDM supports the Libraries' Campus Repository
Service, e-Journal Hosting and Publishing Support Services, Research Data
Management Support Services, and is the home of the Libraries' Office of
Copyright Management and Scholarly Communication.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  * Provides leadership and direction on metadata and metadata practices for the UA Libraries
  * In collaboration with digital collection managers throughout the Libraries, develops descriptive metadata schemas appropriate to various digital collections
  * Develops and maintains a holistic descriptive strategy to improve and increase the ability of users to discover the content made available by the UA Libraries
  * Contributes to the design and implementation of metadata standards for digital preservation
  * Supports and serves as a resource to colleagues on metadata issues and practices
  * Supports the UA Libraries' data management services by consulting on requests related to data organization and management
  * Participates in and supports the work of the Scholarly Publishing and Data Management Team
  * As a member of the library profession, the Library Faculty Assembly and the general faculty of the University of Arizona, actively contributes to the library profession through research, service and scholarship, and engages in faculty governance of the Libraries and the University through service in the Library Faculty Assembly and on appropriate University committees.
  
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  * ALA accredited MLS/MLIS as of January 1, 2013
  * Experience with Dublin Core based descriptive metadata schemas and practices
  
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  * Demonstrated ability to learn and apply new metadata schemas
  * Knowledge of discovery tools and metadata practices supporting discovery, specifically in a library context
  * Knowledge of METS, MODS, and PREMIS
  * Knowledge of and experience with MARC
  * Knowledge of EAD and TEI
  * Experience with ContentDM, DSpace, or similar repository technologies
  * Knowledge of latest practices and approaches related to digital identifiers
  * Knowledge of preservation metadata schemas and practices
  * Knowledge of current and emerging approaches for digital preservation
  * Experience with III Millennium or similar integrated library systems
  * Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  * Strong analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills
  * Commitment to professional growth and development
  * Ability to work in a continually changing environment
  * Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a collegial, team based environment and maintain positive working relationships.
  * Demonstrated programming skill and ability (Python, Php, Java, etc.), especially related to metadata manipulation
  * Knowledge of emerging academic library practices in the support of data management
