EMBL - European Molecular Biology Laboratory -PDBe Curation Team

Location: EBI - Hinxton near Cambridge, UK

Staff Category: Staff Member

Contract Duration: 2 years

Grading: 5

Closing Date: 14 November 2012

Reference number: EBI_00252

**Job Description**
The Protein Data Bank in Europe is looking to recruit an expert structural
biologist for the PDBe curation team at the European Bioinformatics Institute
(EMBL-EBI) which is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge
in the UK.

The Protein Data Bank in Europe (PDBe; [pdbe.org](http://pdbe.org)) is part of
the Worldwide Protein Data Bank organisation (wwPDB;
[wwpdb.org](http://wwpdb.org)) which maintains the global archive of 3D
structural data on biomacromolecules. The PDBe team also maintains a number of
databases that support deposition and advanced search services for structural
biologists and the wider scientific community. The team consists of an
international and interdisciplinary mix of professionals (scientific and IT
specialists).

High-quality curation of new depositions is essential for the PDB to remain
the authoritative global source of biomacromolecular structure information.
The work involves annotating preliminary PDB submissions and extracting
relevant biological information. In addition, curators contribute to training,
outreach and user-support activities of PDBe and EMBL-EBI.

**Qualifications and Experience**
Applicants should be computer literate and possess a recent PhD in some area
of structural biology or structural chemistry as well as a broad knowledge in
molecular biology or biochemistry. An in-depth knowledge of protein structure
(including structure determination, analysis and validation) is essential. A
few years of post-doctoral research experience in structural biology, as well
as hands-on experience in the determination of protein structure are highly
desirable.

Given the extensive interactions with colleagues in the PDBe team as well as
with international collaborators, depositors and users, excellent written and
oral communication skills, fluency in English, ability to work in a team and
attention to detail are required.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with Linux/Unix operating systems and
molecular graphics software. Basic programming skills (e.g. Perl, Python or
Java) would be an advantage.

**Application Instructions**
Please apply online by clicking on the Apply button below.

**Additional Information**
EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive
conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation.

Please note that appointments on fixed term contracts can be renewed,
depending on circumstances at the time of the review.

Note that special visa requirements apply to employees from non EU countries
working at EMBL-EBI in the UK. The period of work does not apply for the
Highly Skilled Migrants Programme.
