The University of Chicago Library is seeking a Unix Systems Administrator to
join our Digital Library Development Center (DLDC) team.

  
The DLDC collaborates with librarians, faculty, university departments and
other groups, and colleagues at other institutions, to develop and maintain
networked information systems for use today, and to ensure the long-term
preservation of information resources delivered through these systems for
continued availability in the future.

  
Our core activities include designing, building, and maintaining web sites,
dynamic information resources, and digital collections; installing and
supporting vended systems that provide access to information resources;
administering the network of information server computers which underlie our
digital library and which support related initiatives on campus; researching,
evaluating, and implementing new technologies; participating in national and
international digital library initiatives; and documenting and sharing
procedures, policies, and discoveries.

The Job:

  
The Unix Systems Administrator performs tasks related to the administration of
an integrated cluster of networked Unix/Linux server computers, including
installation, configuration, maintenance and upgrading of system software,
performing data backups and restores, account administration, security and
performance monitoring, according to established procedures.

  
This position also performs or participates in installation, configuration,
testing and maintenance of vended systems on Linux server computers;
troubleshoots software and hardware problems to maintain a high standard of
reliability.

  
Qualifications:

  
Bachelor's degree and three years full-time experience as a system
administrator in a production Unix/Linux environment is
required. We are also looking for expert knowledge of the
utilities used in Unix/Linux system administration with a thorough knowledge
of Linux. Hands-on expertise in Apache, Tomcat and MySQL or Oracle
configuration and administration is essential, along with hands-on expertise
in installing, configuring and maintaining server computer hardware.

  
Knowledge of system and network security plus proven ability to automate
solutions to system administration problems with languages such as sh, TCL,
Perl, Python or Ruby is required. We also require previous
experience using a revision control system and previous experience using emacs
or vi(m).

interpersonal and analytical skills, along with a customer service focus. It
is key that you come with a demonstrated ability to provide technical
leadership, and to act on your own initiative to identify and solve problems.
