Catawba County seeks a dynamic, passionate, and visionary leader, with strong
enthusiasm for customer service to become our next Library Director. An
innovative and progressive environment, the Catawba County Library System
currently includes 7 library locations and 32 full-time employees. The library
has a collection of 244,000 print or non-print items and an annual circulation
of 740,000. Services in Catawba County are cutting edge so we are looking for
someone who possesses the motivation and demonstrated skills to move library
services on a continual basis into the modern community.

  
THE COMMUNITY: Located in the beautiful foothills of North Carolina, Catawba
County provides an outstanding quality of life for its diverse population of
154,000 citizens. It is a vibrant county, home to Lenoir Rhyne University, the
Appalachian State University Center at Hickory, and Catawba Valley Community
College. Throughout its history as well as today, Catawba County has retained
its city as well as small-towns friendliness; its sense of place and historic
roots; evidence of care for the natural environment; and the thoughtful
integration of commercial areas with the fabric of the county. Our community
is a historically rich and diverse area with access to a plethora of engaging
activities making it a great place for both families and singles to live,
work, and play. Activities include sports (Hickory Crawdads Baseball, several
golf courses, and the Hickory Motor Speedway), recreation (3 lakes and many
parks), culture (Hickory Museum of Art, Western Piedmont Symphony, Green Room
Theatre), and education (The Catawba Science Center and the Catawba County
Historical Museum). Catawba County, the center of the Greater Hickory Metro
area, is conveniently located within a one hour driving distance to Charlotte,
Asheville, and Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

  
Responsibilities:

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Provides financial planning data to the library board to assist in establishing long and short-term financial priorities; provides quarterly system updates to the board  
* Development and implementation of the operational budget and capital outlay budget for the library system  
* Works collaboratively with County Management, Commissioners, and the Library Board of Trustees  
* Orients new trustees and serves as a resource for trustee activities  
* Directs the maintenance of library building and grounds and recommends future space needs  
* Demonstrates leadership within the organization; Takes initiative, solves problems, effects changes through the action of others and development of staff through a positive work environment  
* The library director provides a climate that encourages development of innovative programs and projects  
  
PLANNING, ORGANIZATION, AND EVALUATION RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Plans, organizes, coordinates, and directs a balanced program of library services to meet the immediate and long-range goals of the library and the community  
* Identifies and promotes the standards of excellence of all operations  
* Investigates new trends and specific library programs and facilitates testing of new techniques, materials, technology, and equipment to improve the operation of the library  
  
PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Responsible for personnel administration including selection, training, and evaluation of library staff  
* Provides direct and indirect supervision of library staff  
* Works to promote high staff morale  
* Encourages staff professional growth at all levels by supporting participation in professional associations, workshops, seminars, and activities  
* Acts as a consultant, mediator, and facilitator for staff  
  
COMMUNITY AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Represents the library and speaks before community, civic, ,and other groups regarding the objectives and activities of the library  
* Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other governmental agencies, civic, and community groups, and the general public  
* Serves as a model to staff in the sense of professionalism demonstrating strong professional and person ethics and keeping informed through professional literature  
* Attends professional and other meetings to maintain contact with other professional and library-related agencies  
* Participates in professional development and opportunities to enhance managerial skills and maintains an awareness of new trends and developments in the library field  
  
Qualifications:

* Master's Degree in Library Science and four years professional experience in the library field, including supervisory and administrative experience  
* Must be certified by the North Carolina Library Certification Board  
  
FURTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

* Thorough knowledge of philosophy and techniques of all facets of public library service  
* Ability to think analytically and develop new services  
* Demonstrated dynamic motivational leadership skills  
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, supervisors, volunteers, and other community agencies, governmental bodies, and the general public  
* Visionary regarding library trends and the impact of changing information technology with ability to strategically lead a progressive library system into the modern community  
* Active in engagement and networking within professional library groups
