The Loeb Music Library seeks a service-oriented Assistant Keeper for its Isham Library, a world-class collection of 30,000 musical sources on microfilm, printed facsimiles, rare books and musical scores, as well as other resources in support of research with the primary sources of music. TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist with managing the operation of the Isham Library and Merritt Room rare collections Serve the Isham Library's clientele, which includes a wide range of scholars, students and musicians, members of the Harvard community, visitors and remote users who desire access to primary sources and microfilms of music manuscripts, early prints and rare books Respond to complex reference questions concerning musical sources Arrange, describe and process paper-based archival collections and create EAD finding aids Create order records for new acquisitions and assist in the receipt and processing of new orders. Assist the Keeper in managing correspondence with libraries and other repositories of unique musical materials Assist with the research, planning, and execution of exhibits Assist in the training and supervision of student staff in Isham Basic Qualifications HS Diploma or equivalent required. Strong background in European classical music essential, including knowledge of historical forms of musical notation. Minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience. Additional Qualifications Bachelor's degree in music preferred. Comprehensive knowledge of additional areas of musical scholarship such as non-Western music and jazz highly desirable. Reading knowledge of at least one Western European language preferred. Experience with EAD standards and practices, ALEPH, HOLLIS, or other ILS system and experience creating finding aids highly desirable. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills in service of tactful communications; sensitivity to concerns of multiple constituencies simultaneously; excellent written and verbal communications. Demonstrated research and problem-solving skills and service orientation. Demonstrated ability to perform detailed work accurately and efficiently in a productivity-oriented environment; excellent organizational skills.
