Job title: **Montana Digital Newspaper Project Assistant (51730129)** Location:**Montana Historical Society, Helena, Montana** This position is funded by a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant to the Montana Historical Society. During the two-year grant period, the Montana Newspaper Digitization Project will digitize 100,000 Montana newspaper pages published between the years 1864 and 1922. The project team will collect and record publishing data and other facts about thousands of late 19th- and early 20th-century newspaper pages on microfilm and in digital form. Ultimately, the digitized newspapers will be submitted to the Library of Congress and uploaded to the Chronicling America web site at www.loc.gov/chroniclingamerica. Duties: The Montana Historical Society seeks a Project Assistant for the Montana Digital Newspaper Project, a grant-funded project ending on August 31, 2013 with possible extension to August 2015. The Data Technician is responsible for examining microfilm, collecting and managing data, performing quality control, and assisting the Project Coordinator. Essential duties and responsibilities include: • Closely examine historical newspapers on microfilm, accurately recording data about issues and pages using established workflow and tools (30%). • Perform quality control on digital images, metadata, Optical Character Recognition-generated text, and other deliverables provided by vendor (30%). • Enter data in and help maintain databases, spreadsheets, and other applications; run queries and generate reports (20%). • Prepare shipments of microfilm and hard drives according to established procedures (10%). • Other duties as assigned (10%).
