The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) offers the opportunity for a suitably
qualified person to over-winter in Antarctica at our new Station Halley VI
(76°S, 27°W). This is data management with a difference. As part of a small,
highly motivated team, you will be spending a whole year in the Antarctic,
life here is like nowhere else, so you must be ready to take on all the
challenges it offers. With the unparalleled beauty of the Antarctic, you will
find this a profitable experience in more ways than one. The primary role of
the successful candidate will be to maintain and operate the data systems for
a suite of scientific instruments studying the atmosphere and geospace.

  
The successful candidate will work within a small team that manage, maintain,
operate and develop science information services for scientific experiments
based in Antarctica. You will have proven ability in scientific data
management from within a principally Linux computing environment coupled with
self-reliance and strong motivation. You must be adaptable and willing to take
on various tasks as they arise including a considerable amount of outdoor
maintenance and general base work as well as your share in routine duties such
as out of hours meteorological observations.

  
The appointment will be for approximately 19 months, commencing in July 2013.
The successful candidate will assist in preparing the equipment needed at
Halley and will undertake appropriate specialist training in Cambridge prior
to travelling to Antarctica in autumn 2013 and returning in spring 2015.

  
This will be a challenging and demanding opportunity in an extreme and
isolated environment. Applicants must therefore be physically capable and
medically fit.

  
Qualifications: Relevant practical experience in Linux administration and
science data management is essential, knowledge of data acquisition
techniques, and general programming skills would be an advantage. Candidates
should have a minimum of an HNC in a computing related subject and ideally
several years' experience.

  
Duration: approximately 19 months
