I'm very new to this group, so I don't know that much about the history. Tues was the first call I've attended (I've done the webinars) - I and my institution was part of the NDIIPP project for GIS records (GeoMAPP) and we are active in NDSA Content working group, and the geospatial sub-group.

Two things:
1. I think the idea that someone mentioned about separating storage and preservation is a good one. Duracloud is great, but doesn't address the issues of data migration and format preservation. Archivematica attempts to deal with some those issues.

2. Are we just fixated on open-source solutions? And if so, why? We seem to be limiting ourselves if we do that. We just recently purchased the Preservica cloud-based solution from Tessella - and chose it over Archivematica for several reasons.

And to address Shawn's question posed here: the Council of State Archivists SERI (States Electronic Records Initiative) project is, in part, working on a web portal to be a clearinghouse of sorts for tools related to digital preservation. There focusing on more than just cloud storage/preservation, but they are trying to cast the net pretty wide at this point. May not be the best solution, but it's a start.

I'm on that sub-committee which is part of the reason I'm here, they wanted someone on the committee to monitor the activity of this group.

Subject: Re: [NDSA-INFRASTRUCTURE] National Agenda Brainstorming

Hi all --

My apologies if this was discussed, dismissed, or otherwise deemed not pertinent at some point (I missed the call). As means are identified for addressing such national agenda issues as using the cloud for preservation storage, I think it would be very useful to create a clearinghouse for sharing information. For instance, my organization, the Minnesota Historical Society, is hiring a consultant to research cloud storage options for our digital content, which we will then compare against other possible storage architectures. I know others would be interested in this information, and it would be great if there was someplace I could submit my contact information and a brief description of the project so that people could contact me and ask questions rather than having to re-invent the wheel. I know I wish I could've looked at a sample RFP as I developed my list of requirements. Such a clearinghouse wouldn't have to be elaborate, just some user-populated, consistent captured information to make it self-service searchable. Having guidelines for best practices is great, but I would find real value in also connecting with others with practical experience.

Thanks --
Shawn
