Copyright and Digital Access Librarian--Washington University Libraries


Essential Functions
Contributes to the development, implementation and delivery of all digital projects, primarily in the broad areas of XML document modeling, imaging and oversight for assigned projects. Maintains a special focus on areas intersecting with legal content and issues, and scholarly communications where it intersects with digital collections and services. Monitors digital library encoding and imaging standards, delivery methods, and ensures compliance. Develops documentation on procedures and provides updates on the progress of digital projects. Provides training on digital library technologies, tools, digital
asset production, and related issues in digital content creation, and standards for student assistants and staff.
Prepares and maintains information regarding copyright for library and university web documents, blogs, etc.; identifies training needs and delivers or arranges instruction about copyright issues for the library.
Plans, designs, and delivers copyright information and education to library staff. Supports library staff with work-related copyright concerns. Assists librarians with copyright information, workflow suggestions, forms, etc. Works closely with the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and General Counsel (OGC) and other copyright education and management personnel in libraries on campus.
Monitors current trends in copyright law affecting libraries and alerts staff to changes and opportunities related to library resources or services.
- Manage assigned digital projects; design and oversee project web sites.
- Establish workflows for XML and other digital library file creation, editing, transformation, correction and management; document processes, workflows, and local standards.
- Manage copyright compliance issues or license-related requests primarily from library staff in all operations of the library such as acquisitions, digital institutional repository, digital library services, electronic resources, library instruction, reserves/interlibrary loan, scholarly communications, special collections, and subject librarians; provide appropriate support for library staff with vendor contracts, licenses, and other agreements on request; act as an intermediary between the library staff and OGC; collaborate with Law and Medical library staff with similar responsibilities.
- Prepare and maintain information regarding copyright for library and university web documents, blogs, etc.; identify training needs and deliver or arrange instruction about copyright issues for the library and WU community; train library staff on digital library tools and standards.
- Monitor and stay current on issues in copyright law, licenses and current cases, especially as related to library collections and services, in order to provide support for decision making by library staff; regularly review current digital library standards and best practices.
- Participate in library committees, projects and other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
JD, or MLS plus significant legal knowledge and experience.
Experience with web technologies and standards such as HTML, XHTML or Dublin Core
Knowledge of XML and at least one application such as TEI, EAD, or METS
Experience with digital imaging equipment and software.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with copyright issues in scholarly publishing, digitization and digital preservation projects, reserves, ILL, and higher education
Experience with digital asset creation in a library, museum, or academic setting, or relevant commercial environment
Knowledge of digital library technologies, standards, and major digital library delivery systems for digital assets, such as eXist, XTF, DLXS, or LUNA Insight; advanced XML and XSL
Knowledge of UNIX / Linux and Windows operating systems
Supervisory experience; experience in a higher education setting
Salary Range
$3,472.67 - $4,514.25 per month
