Hi everyone,

A group of librarians from ALA/ALCTS/PARS (American Library Association/Association for Library Resources and Technical Services/Preservation and Formatting Section) is working on revisiting the Preservation Statistics that ARL stopped collecting a few years back. There will be several questions related to digital reformatting and digital preservation, the boundaries of which can get murky, particularly with respect to time-based media.

If the group is amenable, I'd like to invite Annie Peterson (Tulane) and Helen Bailey (MIT) to join the call on Monday to talk about what sorts of digital preservation metrics would be useful, relatively easy to collect on a regular basis, and applicable across institutions of different sizes. Something like the annual ARL statistics needs pretty broad participation to be meaningful, and gathering statistics must be readily incorporated into workflows without too much time or effort; if it's too complicated or if folks are not clear on what the metric is measuring, they simply won't participate. Input from this Working Group could be very helpful in making sure the metrics jive with practice.

And on a related note, would folks be willing to share the data from the Digital Preservation Staffing survey? The PARS group's draft will include at least one question about staffing for digital preservation, and our survey might help them decide which questions to ask and how to word them.

Thanks, talk to you on Monday.
