Duke University Libraries invites applications for two Science Librarians for
the Natural Sciences and Engineering Section of the Research and Instructional
Services Department.The successful candidates will have a
background in Biology, Chemistry and/or Environmental Sciences and will be
assigned liaison duties to one or more academic units based
on qualifications and library needs

The Science Librarian actively engages with faculty, students, visiting
scholars, and staff in assigned scientific academic units.
S/he collaborates with colleagues to provide and promote library resources and
services that support these fields; manages the Libraries' collections in
these areas; and provides specialized research assistance and instruction to
library users.



  * Serves as primary liaison to and actively develops professional relationships with faculty, students and staff in assigned areas
  * Provides in-depth, specialized research consultation for students, faculty, and visiting scholars in assigned areas
  * Teaches research tools and skills relevant to the discipline
  * Contributes to university efforts to assess and promote institutional scholarship (e.g. DukeSpace, Scholars@Duke, exhibits, events)
  * Collections
  * Works with Natural Sciences and Engineering Collections Coordinator to develop and manage collections in relevant formats and languages in assigned areas to support the research and teaching needs of the Duke University community
  * Promotes resources using current tools and technologies
  * Collaborates with colleagues in related fields to purchase materials
Collective Responsibilities

  * Takes part in the rotational schedule for service desks and instant messaging, answering questions about the Libraries' resources and assisting patrons.
  * Contributes to the development of and access to library website, research tools and other applications of technology.
  * Participates in Natural Sciences and Engineering Section of subject librarians and fosters cooperation with other staff at Duke and relevant personnel at other institutions.
  * Participates in or contributes to the ongoing evolution of the Libraries' services
  * Participates in and contributes to management and curation of scientific research data
  * Displays continuing growth in professional and subject knowledge and takes an active interest in the profession. Growth and interest should be demonstrated through continuing development of professional knowledge and abilities, membership and participation in professional organizations, and service to the library, University, or community in a professional capacity.
  * Participates in development and fund raising efforts as appropriate.
  * Performs other tasks as designated by the department head or library administration.

Required: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program or an advanced degree
in a relevant subject field with appropriate experience.

Preferred: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program and an advanced
degree in a relevant subject field.


Required:Proficiency with information resources in a
variety of formats and subject areas; teaching or library instruction
experience.; must be flexible and a self-starter; have the ability to work
successfully in a highly collaborative environment; possess excellent
organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills as
well as a strong commitment to public service; interest in and aptitude for
learning emerging technologies and web applications; commitment to data-
informed decision-making.

Preferred:Three years of relevant professional experience
and strong academic background in a relevant field; experience providing
research support, preferably in an academic setting; familiarity with web
publishing technologies; experience with user and/or usability study
methodologies; experience with assessment tools and methods; experience with
data management and knowledge of concepts related to open access; demonstrated
record of ongoing professional development.
