The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and
Anthropology (Penn Museum) is looking for a Collections Database

DUTIES: Reporting to the Senior Registrar of the Penn Museum and working
closely with the IT Department and the Museum's Collections Staff, the
Collections Database Administrator is a key member of the team responsible for
providing technical advice and maintaining, troubleshooting, imaging, and
enhancing the Museum's collections databases (including the primary EMu system
as well as some other legacy platforms), both behind-the-scenes at the Museum
and on the Museum's website. The Collections Database Administrator maintains,
implements, and updates policies and procedures for ensuring the security and
integrity of the EMu system while actively ensuring adherence to data
standards across the EMu environment. The Collections Database Administrator
manages and undertakes the technical and procedural responsibilities to ensure
the utilization of EMu's functionality to advance collections information
management and collections-related tasks.

Support and maintain the EMu collections database

Work with IT to support and maintain the Museum's online collections database

Maintain and update in-house EMu standards documentation and users' manual

Serve as a liaison with KE Software support staff and be active in the EMu
user community

Respond to users' questions and solve users' problems related to the use of

Lead the review of the Museum's controlled vocabulary in EMu and monitor its

Use Crystal Reports to modify existing reports and develop new reports

Maintain user accounts and security controls

Maintain the user-training program and conduct EMu user-training sessions

Review and implement EMu new releases and upgrades

Supervise part-time staff and volunteers working on EMu related tasks

Implement new EMu modules and applications to benefit the collections related

Migrate freestanding legacy collections databases into the EMu system

Learn new skills and keep up with emerging technology


A Bachelor's degree (Master's degree preferred) in computer and information
systems (with a focus on database administration preferred), Museum Studies,
and/or a related field in combination with 2-3 years of relevant experience or
equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience working in a museum setting and knowledge of museum operations,
policies, and standards.

Excellent team member and communication skills, customer service experience,
and able to work independently and with a variety of people with different
skill sets and from different disciplines. Self-motivated, open-minded, and a
fast learner. Handle multiple tasks and work under stress while providing
quality work and meeting deadlines.

Experience working with EMu and Crystal Reports strongly preferred. Proven
ability in managing other major museum collections management systems and
report writing skills may also be considered.

Working knowledge of data architectures, metadata standards, imaging, digital
asset management, and computer hardware and software required.

Programming experience Java (especially) or other object-oriented programming
language strongly preferred. Experience with Linux/Unix (especially), SQL,
Apache SOLR strongly desired.
