The University Library at the University of California, Santa Cruz seeks a
skilled, innovative, and knowledgeable professional for the position of
Metadata Librarian in the Technical Services Department. Reporting to the head
of technical services, the metadata librarian works collaboratively to provide
leadership and direction in metadata and metadata practices in cooperation
with a wide range of stakeholders. The metadata librarian serves as the
library's primary resource for non-MARC metadata design, structure, and
standards. This new position will play a major role in the library's efforts
to develop and coordinate best practices in providing a holistic approach to
metadata practices, working to ensure the interoperability and sustainability
of metadata in bibliographic systems within the library as well as metadata
contributed to California Digital Library services and other external sources.

The metadata librarian supports initiatives related to digitization, special
collections access, and other metadata-dependent efforts to describe, manage,
expose, and share collections with users. The metadata librarian participates
in the development, implementation, and evaluation of metadata policies,
goals, and procedures. The position works closely with the heads of technical
services, digital initiatives, and special collections to set -- and ensure
the uniform application of -- standards for resource description of the
library's local and unique digital collections.

The position engages in authority control processes to provide intellectual
control over the application of personal names, place names, and subject
headings as a component of the metadata process.

The metadata librarian serves as a resource to colleagues, locally and within
the University of California library system, on metadata issues and practices.
The position will monitor trends in national resource description standards
and emerging technologies, applying developments as appropriate and informing
colleagues of potential impact on local practices.

SALARY: Appointment Salary Range, $49,464-$54,444;commensurate with
qualifications and experience


MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution

Minimum of 2 years of professional metadata creation experience in an academic
or research library or equivalent professional venue (e.g. museum, grant
project, historical society).

Demonstrated knowledge of MARC and non-MARC metadata formats, standards and
schema (e.g., Dublin Core, METS, MODS, EAD, etc.)

Experience with principles of authority control, including selecting and
applying controlled vocabularies and ontologies to local collections

Experience using emerging technologies for metadata management and delivery

Knowledge of discovery tools and metadata practices supporting discovery,
specifically in a library context

Experience working with collection management systems such as CONTENTdm and
Archivists' Toolkit

Experience working with collaborative cross-departmental project teams

Experience working in support of a special collections and/or digital
collections environment


Experience with a national bibliographic utility such as OCLC and an
integrated library system such as Innovative Interfaces' Millennium

Experience with XML and XLST metadata transforms and familiarity with data
interchange standards

Experience creating NACO-compliant authority records or formal NACO training

Experience with scripting languages, especially related to metadata

Experience working with vendors on metadata cleanup and enhancement projects

Knowledge of preservation metadata standards such as PREMIS

Experience with training and consulting

Evidence of flexibility and ability to adapt in a rapidly changing environment

Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
