Library Digital Archivist
Florida International University

Creates original descriptive metadata (in a variety of schemas) for internal
tracking system as well as various digital library systems.

Publishes and preserves Electronic Thesis and Dissertations by performing file
processing, metadata embedding, performing quality control, uploading to the
Institutional Repository and the Florida Digital Archive, and act as liaison
to the University Graduate School for issues related to ETDs.

Performs quality assurance checks on digitized material and metadata.

Utilizes digital library and institutional repository software to associate
metadata with digital images, video and/or sound files for online display.

Performs research for projects related to digital library collections and
discovery systems dealing with historical, cultural and scientific materials
as well as institutionally created content for the institutional repository.

Works closely with the Libraries' IR Coordinator, assisting in copyright,
intellectual property, and permissions research; ingesting content into the
institutional repository.

Manipulates both born digital and digitized files for dissemination and
preservation purposes using various format specific software applications,
including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Distiller, and others as
applicable.

Utilize FTP and web based file transfer procedures to upload file packages and
metadata sets to various databases and to submit digital files and associated
metadata for preservation in the Florida Digital Archive.

Monitors the preservation status of file/metadata packages using the in-house
tracking system and troubleshoot/correct preservation package errors and
failures.

Performs related duties as required or as directed. The omission of specific
duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are
logically related to the position.

  
  
Minimum Qualifications

  
High school diploma and six years of experience. College
coursework or vocational training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the
required experience.

  
Desired Qualifications

  
Demonstrated knowledge of digital production (including digitization, metadata
creation, and preservation)

Working knowledge of main-stream metadata schemas (including Dublin Core,
MODS, and METS)

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Strong sense of teamwork and ability to work across diverse departments and
individual library and university stakeholders

Strong attention to detail

Computer proficiency (knowledge/comfort in multiple operating systems is a
plus)

Ability to follow complex standard operating procedures

Ability to enter and/or review data or metadata batch-loads according to
established criteria with 100% accuracy

The ideal candidate would also be able to demonstrate:

-Working knowledge of library functions and understanding of day-to-day library operations is highly desired  
-A four-year degree from an accredited university is strongly preferred  
-Experience working with databases, file transfers, digital collections software  
-Experience with XML, Webdesign, HTML, CSS, and any programming knowledge is a plus.  
-Certificates or degrees in computer or information sciences will be given favorable consideration  
-Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages; Spanish most useful
