What about using some of the open source WSO2 products to mimic the same functionality as EZProxy? This sounds like a task that Enterprise Service Bus combined (ESB) with Identity Server (IS) could do. Most of their products are some version of an Apache project or other wrapped up in a common user interface.

It should be incumbent on us as information specialists to unburden the user to the extent possible.
