Web Developer - Assistant Project Manager for Digital Library National Institute for Newman Studies Pittsburgh **Web Developer / Digital Library Assistant Project Manager** National Institute for Newman Studies - Pittsburgh, PA The National Institute for Newman Studies (NINS) is an academic research library for scholars in the Humanities who are interested in the writings of Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman (1801-1890). NINS is an independent non- profit organization affiliated with Duquesne University, and is located in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA. The NINS library contains an extensive collection of Newman's works, including first-edition copies and other Victorian-era texts, including Newman-related works in the fields of theology, spirituality, philosophy, literature, and church history. In addition to its collection of printed material, NINS is spearheading the development of a comprehensive digital collection of Newman material. This includes all of his published works, as well as the full corpus of his hand-written manuscripts and documents, which are located in his official archive in Birmingham, England. The manuscript and archival digital collection is expected to total over 250,000 images. NINS is seeking a uniquely qualified candidate to be both a Web Developer and Assistant Project Manager who can assist us in organizing our digital collections and making them available through a user-friendly, state-of-the- art digital library that will set a new standard for excellence in the world of digital humanities. The web developer will build our new digital library from concept to completion using open source tools, some of which have been used to lay the foundation of the project. The web developer will work closely with the NINS Digital Library Project Manager and the NINS Executive Director to develop specifications and make recommendations on the use of new technologies. Web site development and programming, graphic design, metadata creation, and database administration are all elements of this position. **Responsibilities** • Develop digital library using existing and new content creating site layout and user interface • Integrate data from various back-end services from other systems into our digital library (i.e. e-journals, e-texts, and databases) • Create and maintain software documentation • Maintain, expand, and scale our digital library and general web presence • Maintain awareness of emerging technologies and industry trends and apply them into NINS' operations and activities • Cooperate with Project Manager and Executive Director to creatively imagine a digital library to set a new standard for excellence in the digital humanities. **Requirements** Candidates will be considered if they have of the following qualifications: At least three years of proven experience in web programming / web page development; must be able to document past successful work, and have at least two reference contacts from past clients and/or employers. M.S. or equivalent in Library and Information Sciences; willing to consider candidates with B.S. Library and Information Sciences who also have at least one year of experience working in the world of digital libraries and/or digital archives. • Ability to work full-time on-site in Pittsburgh. • Strong appreciation for humanities scholarship in general and for scholarship in religion, theology, and philosophy in particular. • Experience developing and implementing open source software projects. Digital library development experience especially welcome. • Knowledge of crowd sourcing technologies • First class advanced programming skills and in-depth knowledge of modern HTML/XHTML and CSS • Familiarity with at least one of the following programming languages: PHP, ASP.NET, JavaScript • Experience developing relational database systems such as MySQL, MSSQL, and web application development • Strong skills in Photoshop (or equivalent), Adobe Acrobat Pro, Microsoft Office applications. Use of EndNote or other bibliographic software tools, a plus • Hands-on experience with network diagnostics, network analytics tools • Very strong organizational and self-motivational skills, including the ability to work successfully on multiple tasks and meet deadlines. • Ability to work comfortably in MacIntosh software systems and platforms This is a full-time contractual position for a period of two - three years, but could be extended depending on quality of performance and ongoing need.
