The University of Virginia's Miller Center (millercenter.org) seeks a Web Developer to develop moderately complex to complex custom code designed to enhance user appeal and utility, as well as overall functionality of the Center's website and databases. The Web Developer will create and adapt front-end user interfaces to new or existing databases to make web content available to users; develop custom code to make various types of digital resources available through the web; and maintain, expand, update, and assist in the automation of existing websites using web programming languages, employing best practices pertaining to information design, user interface development, and graphics handling. For the first three years of employment, up to 50% of the Web Developer's time will be devoted to a project utilizing Solr and Blacklight. Specifically, the Web Developer will work on a digitization project with a goal of extracting item-level metadata from nineteenth-century handwritten documents. Required computer applications include Linux, MySQL, HTML5, PHP, CSS, and JavaScript. Preferred computer applications include Solr, Ruby on Rails, and ExpressionEngine, as well as experience in emerging advancements in OCR.
