Discovery Services Librarian 
MacEwan University
Edmonton

Reporting to the Chair of Access and Discovery Services, the full-time
continuing Discovery Services Librarian will be responsible for contributing
to the Library's mission of delivering a seamless, user-focused, online
experience. The successful candidate will apply his or her knowledge and
experience with discovery tools, metadata, and library technologies to improve
library users' access to our collections, resources and services.

  
The Discovery Services Librarian will work in collaboration with her/his
colleagues to develop, implement and assess policies, practices and
technologies designed to enhance information discovery and sharing. Working on
a wide variety of projects, many of which will be collaborative in scope, the
successful candidate will seek ways to improve, extend, and integrate the
Libraries' various search tools and online environments. The Discovery
Services Librarian will also provide expertise to library staff dedicated to
acquisitions, public services, the library website, institutional repository
and archives. As a member of the Access and Discovery Unit, the individual
will actively participate in the ongoing planning and delivery of contemporary
and leading edge academic services.

  
Key responsibilities include:

  * Lead the development of strategies to improve access to library collections, resources, and services
  * Work with library staff and users to design, develop, and implement solutions that integrate existing library discovery tools with new technologies and approaches (such as APIs and contextual metadata) to create a seamless discovery experience
  * Monitor industry trends and best practices related to information access and discovery and recommend improvements to existing tools and workflows as appropriate.
  * Participate in customization and integration of resources and services within the Library's discovery platform (EDS).
  * Proactively identify service or resource gaps in the online environment and recommend strategies for enhancing/extending access.
  * Maintain currency with metadata standards and practices related to information discovery.
  * Contribute to the development of policies and strategies for data management, preservation and curation.
  * Collaborate with team members to ensure shared scope, objectives, deliverables and schedule.
  
Other responsibilities include:

  * Participate in the provision of online and in-person reference services including IM, chat, email and in-person research consultation.
  * Maintain an awareness of best practices in academic librarianship through ongoing engagement with scholarly and professional literature, and participation in relevant conferences, workshops, and professional development programs.
  * Represent the Library in professional activities within the University as well as at the regional, national and international level.
  * Participate in assessment of services as related to the Access and Discovery unit.
  * Serve as liaison to one or more academic programs, including responsibility for provision of information literacy instruction, collection management activities and engagement with faculty, staff and students.
  
Qualifications

  * ALA accredited MLIS degree
  * 3-5 years of relevant professional experience, preferably in an academic environment
  * Experience with search and discovery tools (EDS, Summon, Primo, Worldcat Local)
  * Demonstrated use of web-based programming languages and development tools
  * Experience with the Drupal content management system is preferred
  * Ability to identify trends and develop effective strategies to enhance access and discovery
  * Knowledge of link resolvers, proxy servers and e-resource management tools
  * Experience with non-marc metadata schemas, standards, and best-practices
  * Demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with faculty, students and staff
  * Excellent communication skills
  * Self directed, flexible and results driven with a demonstrated ability to initiate, collaborate and deliver results
  * Ability to work in a collegial, creative and highly productive environment with a preference for a team based collaborative approach
  * Project management experience
  
Grant MacEwan University, located in Edmonton, is a rapidly growing post-

online presence and access to electronic resources and services.
