Principal Storage Architect

ProQuest is seeking a Principal Storage Engineer.

  
ProQuest's storage ecosystem includes enterprise class arrays from EMC,
NetApp, and SUN. We operate in a large multi-protocol,
heterogeneous operating system environment in data centers located throughout
the continental US and Europe and leverage cloud based storage as
needed. Enterprise Storage at ProQuest is a multi-site,
mission-critical endeavor directly in line with revenue-generation and a large
percentage of the overall IT spend.

  
Under the direction of the Infrastructure Engineering Manager, the candidate
leads a talented team of storage administrators, manages vendor relationships,
and oversees storage solutions design and specification, installation,
provisioning, troubleshooting and reporting.

  
We seek candidates with extensive, proven experience driving standards based
deployments and managing storage in a multi-data center, multi-vendor, multi-
protocol environment. Extensive experience with storage
design and specification, installation planning and execution, routine
maintenance activity and scheduling and troubleshooting storage performance is
required for this position.

  
The candidate will be responsible for the development of the service catalog
for the storage team, managing service delivery, and continuous
improvement. In addition, the candidate will coordinate and
supervise functional resources, engage in problem analysis, provide
comprehensive reporting and metrics for storage utilization/performance and
regularly communicate progress and needs to internal and external
teams. The candidate will mentor and be a role model for
less senior staff.

  
Some of what you'll be doing:

  
Responsible for a global, multi-petabyte storage infrastructure comprised of
EMC, NetApp and SUN storage solutions. Authority to act
within budget and change control parameters

Leads a team of two Senior Storage Administrators, provides technical
direction as well as limited supervisory functions

Develops and maintains cooperative and collaborative relationships with
systems engineering, software development and network teams

Develops and integrates mature storage administration and engineering
processes that insure the continuous availability and efficient utilization of
the storage infrastructure

Insures that storage deliverables are understood, acknowledged, funded,
coordinated with upstream and downstream teams, built and delivered on-time
for all new initiatives and organic growth

Regularly reviews and reports storage capacity and growth and forecasts
storage spend

Regularly reviews and reports storage performance metrics and tracks trends

Forecasts storage spend based on performance requirements

Leads storage intensive projects for the larger IT Infrastructure Engineering
team

Insures that adequate systems monitoring is in-place and that alerting and
reporting integrates in to other technical teams and centralized monitoring
systems.

Acts as the Change Control gatekeeper for storage

Fully documents all aspects of systems including system design and
dependencies, change history, problem history, backup, restore and disaster
recovery procedures and maintenance policies

Continues to increase expertise by staying current with industry trends,
evolutionary and revolutionary storage platforms and technologies through
technical journals, professional affiliations, vendor training and on-going
education

Coordinates internal and external resources, often under pressure and during
off-hours, to resolve technical problems which result in system downtime or
degraded service

Perform other related duties as assigned

What you'll need to be successful:

  
10+ years of SAN Storage Management experience (EMC Symmetrix, EMC Clariion)

10+ years experience supporting and managing storage in a 24x7 online
production environment.

10+ years of NAS Storage Management experience (NetApp or other)

7+ years experience supporting modern/current UNIX/Linux/Windows operating
systems (Solaris/Red Hat EL/Windows Server 2003/8)

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience - Computer Science,
Telecommunications, Management Information Systems or related fields

Expert in all aspects of storage administration (design and specification,
installation, provisioning, day-to-day management, fault isolation,
performance tuning)

Expertise in all of the following: TCP/IP, UDP, NFS, iSCSI,
CIFS, NAS, Enterprise Storage Arrays, RAID, Data Replication, Fiber Channel
Protocol

Hands on experience and expertise with EMC DMX (or V-MAX) class arrays, NetApp
filers, SUN Thumper/Thor storage systems/servers, Veritas VxFS/VCS

Strong proficiency with the following software packages: Navisphere; NaviCLI;
EMC Power Path; ECC:San Manager; ECC:Performance Manager; ECC:Storage Scope;
symcli; symconfigure; symsnap, etc

Strong proficiency with the following software packages:DFM; NetApp
FilverView; Data Protection Manager, Snap Manager

ECC:WLA/Performance Manager; ECC:Storage Scope; symcli; symconfigure; symsnap,
etc

Demonstrated experience in design, configuration , management and
troubleshooting for RDF and Mirrorview including synchronous, asynchronous,
and adaptive copy modes

Expertise with at least one scripting or programming language, prefer
expertise with Perl or Python

Expertise with developing in house tools to automate problem detection,
simplify repetitive tasks, and consolidate multiple information sources to aid
in troubleshooting and fault detection/isolation.

Shell scripting skills: ksh or bash

3+ years in a leadership role providing 24 x 7 on-call support for highly
complex distributed systems consisting of multi-tier client server
applications, relational databases, Intel/SPARC based servers, SAN and NAS
connectivity and network components

Ability to coordinate project oriented and interrupt driven activity
simultaneously.

Ability to work effectively within and across department boundaries

Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written and presentation skills

Bonus Points:

Advanced vendor certification training in one or more of the technologies
supported

Professional certification with at least one of: EMC, RedHat, NetApp, or Sun
