This fast-growing site allows MLA members—over 25,000 scholars in the fields of language and literature—to create profiles, seek feedback from peers on their work, establish and join groups to discuss common interests, and collaborate through new kinds of open-access publications. This developer will be working within the production team to extend and maintain the open-source Commons-in-a-Box <http://commonsinabox.org/> software, which is based on BuddyPress <https://buddypress.org/>. This is an extraordinary opportunity to help shape a platform for the leading membership association in the humanities and contribute to an award-winning and active open source project. In addition, our long-term plans include exciting and eagerly anticipated projects that will expand the scope of*MLA Commons*, some of which are joint ventures with other organizations. Therefore, this developer must be able to communicate and collaborate effectively with others inside and outside the MLA. Skills & Requirements - At least 2 years of experience working with PHP-based application frameworks in a production environment - Demonstrable experience with WordPress plugin and theme development - Experience working with the presentation layer of a Web application in a production environment (HTML, CSS, JS) - Solid SQL skills for extending existing database schemas and creating custom queries - Experience integrating REST APIs for two-way data exchange - Experience working at the system level of a LAMP or LEMP server environment for basic installation and maintenance tasks - Familiarity with the principles of good UX design - Strong interpersonal skills and intellectual curiosity * Bonus Knowledge* - Amazon Web Services, Rackspace, Azure, or other cloud platforms in a production environment - BuddyPress - Fedora digital object repository - Apache Solr or faceted search implementation - Metadata standards About The Modern Language Association Founded in 1883, the Modern Language Association of America provides opportunities for its members to share their scholarly findings and teaching experiences with colleagues and to discuss trends in the academy.
