Dear CW, My first post to this listserv. I've been searching online to find some answers on how Canadian library institution numbers (positions 2 to 5 of the 14) on Code 39 patron and item barcodes are managed and assigned. This section of the barcode is supposed to uniquely identify a library within a particular area. For instance, our library here in Toronto has 3175 as its assigned number; and, hypothetically, no other library would have this as their number. I haven't found much on this, other than certain regions managing these numbers at either the provincial or municipal level - British Columbia is an example (see https://bc.libraries.coop/support/institution-codes/). There is some information from barcode manufacturers such as Brodart, but nothing on how these numbers are created and by whom. Can anyone shed some light on this subject?
