Dear CW,

My first post to this listserv.

I've been searching online to find some answers on how Canadian library institution numbers (positions 2 to 5 of the 14) on Code 39 patron and item barcodes are managed and assigned. This section of the barcode is supposed to uniquely identify a library within a particular area. For instance, our library here in Toronto has 3175 as its assigned number; and, hypothetically, no other library would have this as their number.

I haven't found much on this, other than certain regions managing these numbers at either the provincial or municipal level - British Columbia is an example (see https://bc.libraries.coop/support/institution-codes/). There is some information from barcode manufacturers such as Brodart, but nothing on how these numbers are created and by whom.

Can anyone shed some light on this subject? How did your library obtain its assigned number?

Many thanks,
