The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) advances discovery
and innovation through extreme-scale computing, science-enabling software, and
the skills of our expert staff. The center is part of the flagship University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign--a world leader in research, teaching, and
public engagement--and is located in a micro-urban community that combines

NCSA has one or more System Engineer positions open within our Advanced
Digital Services Division. The System Engineer provides key hardware and
software support functions for some of the most powerful and advanced
computing and data systems in the world. This position may work on projects
including the [Blue Waters Petascale
system](https://bluewaters.ncsa.illinois.edu/) that is one of the world's
largest and most powerful scientific resources, the [Innovative Systems
Laboratory ](http://www.ncsa.illinois.edu/about/org/isl)exploring the next
generation of computing hardware and software, the [Illinois Campus Cluster
Program](https://campuscluster.illinois.edu/) providing scientific computing
to the University of Illinois community, the NCSA Private Sector Program
enabling leading-edge computing for industry and more future projects.

  
  
  
Core Responsibilities:

  
 Installs,
configures, tests, and updates high performance computing and communication
hardware and software systems into the NCSA computing environment,
coordinating with vendors as applicable. Document and report problems to
vendors as well as to internal databases and logs.

 Maintains
documentation on system capabilities, installed software, optimal use of the
system and equipment, for internal group use, for operations staff and for
end-users. Works with documentation staff to provide
material for production of user documentation. Trains other
staff and consultants on support of new capabilities and services.

 Monitors status and
use of resources (systems, networks, disk, memory, as applicable) and adjusts
configurations and/or designs and implements system enhancements to achieve
optimal use of resources and/or user performance and analyzes and resolves
system problems of functional, security and performance.

 Keep current on
skills, knowledge and best practices for HPC system management by researching
on-line, with periodicals or by means of attending lectures or conferences.

 Provide on-call and
off-hours support as assigned.

  
  
  
Required Education and Experience:

  
 BA/BS degree in
engineering, computer science, or related field.
Alternative degree fields will be considered if accompanied by equivalent
experience (depending on nature and depth of experience as it relates to
current NCSA projects and technologies)

 Training and
experience in the management and support of technologies such as UNIX and
Linux system administration.

 One or more years'
experience developing and utilizing bash, perl, python, etc scripting
languages to automate system and user tasks.

 Programming
experience in one or more of the following
languages/systems: C, C++, Fortran, Java.

  
  
  
Preferred Experience:

  
 Developing and
presenting technical training material and web-based technical documentation

 Experience with
networked environments and a wide variety of software and hardware.

 Experience with
high-performance computing environments

 Experience with the
use of accelerators, such as GPUs, in high-performance computing environments

 Experience
configuring and tuning workload management software such as Torque and Moab.

 Experience with
monitoring tools such as Nagios or Ganglia.

  
  
  
This is a regular academic professional position at NCSA and is an annually
renewable, 12/12, 100%-time appointment with regular University benefits.
Salary is commensurate with experience and start date will be as soon as
possible after the close date of the search. Applicants must possess required
