The George Washington University Libraries<http://library.gwu.edu/> (GW Libraries) is seeking nominations and applications for two Associate University Librarians (AULs) to provide leadership to a vibrant and responsive organization. GW Libraries has embarked on an exciting path, serving as a catalyst to spark innovation and new ideas throughout the George Washington University community. Fundamental to our vision is the proactive role that GW Libraries play in sustaining and expanding our intellectual partnerships with faculty and students across the university. This requires an empowered, agile and highly collaborative staff that is willing to provide leadership and ensure growth in responding to an ever-changing information landscape. The two new AULs, along with another current AUL and senior staff members, will provide vision and leadership to librarians and staff of the GW Libraries, which include the main library (Gelman) and the libraries of the Mount Vernon (Eckles) and Virginia campuses. The AULs will work together as a team to consider the most effective approaches for providing services and solutions, and engaging students, faculty and staff to understand their information needs. Projects and activities will be viewed from a total GW Libraries perspective, with librarians and staff performing together based on requirements and skills rather than reporting structures. The end result will be a healthy, vibrant organization that addresses faculty and student needs effectively. As members of the senior management team, they will participate in planning, budget, operations, and personnel decisions for GW Libraries. We invite applicants who have demonstrated dynamic, innovative and creative approaches to empowering and mentoring staff, leading projects, solving problems, and initiating new services designed to meet user needs. Candidates must understand the broad landscape of current trends in research libraries and have a demonstrated track record of successfully implementing new technologies and methods in an operational setting. The AULs will have a proven record of strength in multiple operational areas and flexibility to work towards library-wide goals. This will enable shifts of management responsibility as needed to support an efficient and agile organization that changes and adapts to the university’s needs over time. Areas of oversight could include access services, support for teaching and research, collections, scholarly technology, technical services or other units. As the libraries continue to grow and change, so, too, will the organization. Portfolios of responsibility are likely to shift as areas of focus are realigned. The AULs will serve on Library, University, and consortium committees, as well as represent the Libraries and the University in a variety of groups and forums. Basic Qualifications * ALA-accredited MLS in library or information science or advanced degree with relevant experience and continuing education. * Minimum 10 years of experience as a professional librarian or archivist in increasingly responsible positions. * At least five years of experience in a managerial or supervisory role in libraries or library-related organizations. * Demonstrated ability to engage others in collaborative planning and delivery of user-centered services. * Demonstrated awareness of current trends and ability to assess these trends for implementation in an operational setting. * Demonstrated excellence in leadership, communication, interpersonal and collaborative skills Experience, Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Preferred * Experience in supporting research activities and leading new investigations into innovative information technologies. * Strong project planning and management, with a successful track record of defining and meeting schedules with the resources that are available. * Demonstrated experience with program development and collaboration. * Experience with initiating grant opportunities and working on grant-funded projects. * Involvement with scholarly communications issues, including open access, copyright and publishing. * Experience in working with publication licenses and negotiations. * Technology skills and experience with its application in knowledge management and support of teaching and scholarship. * Commitment to and support for an inclusive, diverse environment. * Demonstrated ability to build and maintain deep collaborative relationships to deliver effective services to users. * Understanding of digital library issues and opportunities, particularly as they impact faculty and student productivity. * Understanding of teaching and learning practices and innovations in higher education. Appointment Rank & Salary Salary and appointment at the rank of Librarian III/IV dependent upon qualifications.
