Open Science Information Architect (THOR Project)

  
The THOR project is a cooperation of CERN, the British Library, ORCID,
DataCite, Dryad, EMBL-EBI, PANGAEA, the Australian National Data Service, PLoS
and Elsevier. THOR builds on the DataCite and ORCID initiatives to uniquely
identify scholarly artefacts (such as data) and attribute them to researchers
through `persistent identifiers' (PIDs). The project is completing
arrangements for financing by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020
Program, is expected to start in June 2015 and last 30 months.

  
THOR project partners aim to make research work better and support Open
Science by, facilitating attribution, discovery and re-use of scientific
artefacts, and deploy enhanced metrics to assess their impact. Services will
be designed and delivered both in general across the ORCID and DataCite
infrastructures, in partnership with data repository (Dryad, ANDS) and
emerging publishers' solutions (PLoS, Elsevier), and through concrete examples
in High-Energy Physics (at CERN), Humanities and Social Sciences (at the
British Library), Life Sciences (at EBI) and Geosciences (at PANGAEA).

  
CERN participates to THOR through the Scientific Information Service within
the General Infrastructure Services Department. CERN is seeking an Information
Architect with a background either in Computer Science or in Library and
Information Science to take a leading role in THOR.

  
The successful candidate will take responsibility for designing and delivering
Open Science services for the High-Energy Physics community. These services
will be based on the opportunity to uniquely scholarly artefacts in the field
(such as data, but also software) across several platforms through DataCite
DOI persistent identifiers, and attribute them uniquely to researchers by
using the ORCID services.

  
R&D activity will be a collaborative endeavor with all THOR partners, while
paying attention to specific requirements of the High-Energy Physics
community. Services and solutions will be implemented through a suite of
existing CERN platforms: mostly the INSPIRE digital library (inspirehep.net),
as well as the CERN Open Data Portal (opendata.cern.ch) and the planned CERN
Analysis Preservation Framework (analysis-preservation.cern.ch). All these
platforms are based on the Invenio digital library technology, and are part of
the CERN Open Science framework.

  
The successful candidate will be part of an international, multidisciplinary
and dynamic team at CERN supporting Open Science initiatives. S/he will
participate to the wider effort of THOR and additionally contribute to overall
R&D for interoperability solution for the ORCID and DataCite integration
across scientific communities.

  


Eligibility conditions

We are looking for an Open Science Information Architect, with either a
Computer Science or a Library and Information Science background and a MSc or
higher diploma and with less than 10 years professional experience after the
MSc including any Doctoral studies, preferably a national from the CERN Member

Experience and qualification for candidates with a Computer Science
background:

.MSc or PhD in Computer Science or equivalent.

.Experience in designing complex information architectures; preferably in a
research environment.

.Experience in developing in a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, Python) stack;
familiarity with git or similar distributed version-control system; desirably
in a production environment.

.Interest in user-centric development and current usability challenges.

.An understanding of how scientists work and current challenges in Open
Science.

.Work experience in an agile software development environment is an asset.

.First-hand experience in developing services for the research community is an
important asset.

.MSc or PhD in Library and Information Science or equivalent.

.First-hand experience in developing services for the research community, and
in particular data management and/or data publishing workflows.

.An understanding of how scientists work and current challenges in Open
Science.

.Work experience in an agile project management environment is an asset.

.Interest and experience in usability studies are an asset.
