IT Technical Specialist II

The IT Technical Specialist II performs a broad scope of professional IT
activities requiring experienced, professional knowledge and application of IT
principles, practices and procedures. Usually requires evaluation, originality
or ingenuity.

  
Additional Department Summary: This position reports to an Associate Dean in
the Libraries and works collaboratively with all personnel working in the
Alabama Digital Humanities Center to provide technical guidance, development,
and support for digital humanities projects undertaken at the University of
Alabama. The person in this position will work
collaboratively with others in various technology positions in the Libraries
and elsewhere on campus being actively engaged with web development, software
design and development, and various aspects of technology development and
support. Work will frequently be team based and deadline
driven.

  
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher and 1 year of
experience in a relevant IT field (Student or Graduate Assistant, Intern, or
student oriented experience will be considered), OR any equivalent combination
of experience, training, education and/or certification from which comparable
knowledge, skills and abilities have been obtained. To be considered student
experience, it must be detailed in the employment section on the application.
Knowledge of intermediate programming, networking, system, multimedia or
instructional technology skills. May require intermediate level training or
certification.

  
Skills and Knowledge: Experience working in teams and with projects. Excellent
verbal and written communication skills. Willingness to build on the work of
other technology projects. Ability to work at ease with
experts in other fields. Willingness to explore, adapt, and
learn. Ability to work on multiple projects according to
the priorities of the moment.

  
Experience developing open-source applications individually or as part of a
team, from conception through implementation, including the architectural
planning, design, coding, testing, debugging, and documentation phases of a
software development project.

  
Experience with relational databases (SQL) and web-based content management
systems (especially WordPress, and Omeka), including design and
implementation.

  
Proficiency in a range of web design and programming languages (including
HTML/HTML5, CSS/CSS3, XML/XSLT, JavaScript libraries (such as jQuery), as well
as various scripting languages (such as PHP, Ruby, Python, or Perl).

  
Functional ability with Linux, MacOS, and Windows

  
Preferred Qualifications: Experience working with faculty and students in an
academic setting.

  
Demonstrated proficiency in one or more of the following digital humanities
areas: natural language processing, data-mining, machine learning, spatial
analysis, data modeling, network analysis, information visualization, text
analysis, audio/video analysis, tagging and annotation, or online
exhibits. Experience with open-source web-mapping tools and
platforms.

  
Background in usability/user experience design.

  
Graphic design experience.
