Duties & Responsibilities

  
Reporting to the Director and Librarian of the Monroe C. Gutman Library and in
support of the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) mission, the
Collections Strategist and Scholarly Communications Librarian leads the
evaluation of collections and content needs throughout HGSE, strategically
builds the collections and content for the Gutman Library and coordinates
relationships with the Harvard Library in the areas of collections and
scholarly communications.

  
The librarian engages with the HGSE community and applies knowledge about the
HGSE curricula and research to stewarding the Gutman Library collection in
support of the teaching, research and learning of the immediate and broader
education community of scholars and educators. The librarian develops the
direction and scope of the collection, evaluates and analyzes collections on a
continuous basis, formulates policies, and manages the collections budget.

  
This position selects materials for the collections, including electronic
resources, data, media, images and other types, to ensure a leading,
intellectually relevant and future-minded collection and collaborates with
other collection development librarians across Harvard's schools in
cooperative purchasing efforts. Working as a team with research and teaching,
and public services managers, the librarian contributes to daily management of
Gutman Library and its services.

  
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  * Plans collection development strategies and policies and serves as principal resource on collection development issues and selection.
  * Engages with the HGSE community regarding library resources and their uses in teaching and research.
  * Educates HGSE community on scholarly communication including open access, the Digital Access to Scholarship at Harvard (DASH) repository and liaises with Harvard Library's Office of Scholarly Communication. Member of the Library Services Coordination Team with Access, Technical and Public Services colleagues.
  * Uses assessment methods, analyzes current and retrospective collection strength and makes recommendations for programmatic change in the collections and builds the collection in designated areas.
  * Manages the materials budget for Gutman Library and reviews spending on a bi-weekly to monthly basis and coordinates budget management with the Shared Services Acquisitions, Serial and E-Resources, and Financial Departments, releasing funds as needed.
  * Represents Gutman Library in cooperative collection development efforts across Harvard and other institutions.
  * Oversees the Distinguished Authors Series of book talks Partners with IT to develop and promote data management solutions.
  * Represents the Library on Harvard Library and external committees, councils and project teams. Responsible for gifts of library materials.
  * Collaborates with research and public services on collection uses and research needs.
  * Participates in library outreach programs within Harvard and beyond.
  * Supervises Collection Development student assistants. May supervise 1-2 staff.
  
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  * Keeps current in ongoing developments in the profession.
  * Performs other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications

  * Masters Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent advanced degree
  * Minimum 3 years library experience
  * Ability to work effectively and collegially with faculty, students, staff and external associates
  * Strong customer service orientation
  * Ability to work both independently and as a team member in a fast paced environment and collaborate effectively in a diverse academic community
  * Understanding of the scholarly research environment
  * Demonstrated knowledge of trends in scholarly communication, publishing, research, and information technology
  * Physical demands: Ability to lift a minimum of 40 lbs.
  
Additional Qualifications

  * Second Master's degree or Ph.D in a relevant subject area preferred Excellent communication skills
