FYI for those of us in the Metro Vancouver area. Are you a librarian or other library staff member who wants to learn more about the basics of software development? Register for this two-day Software Skills for Librarians - Software Carpentry Bootcamp at West Vancouver Memorial Library<http://cmacdonell.github.io/2015-07-09-vpl/>. This example-driven two-day workshop will teach core computing skills that will help you be more productive and effective. It will alternate short tutorials with hands-on practical exercises. Participants are encouraged to help one another and to apply what they are learning to their own work or research problems during the workshop. All work is done on participants' own laptops, so you can go back to work with a functioning setup. The course is aimed at library staff with an interest in using programming to improve their workflows. Open to all interested members of the library community, including students in MLIS or Library Technician programs. MacEwan University is an undergraduate university that is located in downtown Edmonton, Alberta. His teaching and research relate to operating systems, software engineering, cloud computing and virtualization. Cam has helped three Software Carpentry bootcamps for Librarians, one in each of Edmonton, Toronto and New York. Vicky Varga Vicky is a librarian and manager at the Edmonton Public Library. She worked as a web developer at EPL for 5 years, primarily using PHP and ColdFusion. She is interested in teaching other librarians how to program, as she sees these skills as becoming increasingly important to the profession.
