Kalaupapa NHP established as a park unit in 1980, is located midway along the north coast of the island of Molokai, in the State of Hawaii. The park is situated entirely within Kalawao County, which is governed by the Director of the State Department of Health. The County includes the historic Hansen's disease isolation settlements of Kalawao and Kalaupapa. The park was established to commemorate and preserve the story of those afflicted with this dreaded disease and their forced exile from family and friends. Hansen's disease patients were physically isolated from society. For more information, please visit the park's Facebook page. The access to Kalaupapa is very restrictive, not only for tourists, but also for your friends and family. By State Law, friends and family may only visit the park 13 days each quarter of the year and they must wear a visitor ID tag throughout each visit. The cost to travel by plane from Kalaupapa to Honolulu is approximately $160 round trip for residents and $320 round trip for non-residents, including your family members. The other transportation alternative to flying is to hike 3.5 miles up a very steep trail from the park to topside Molokai. Once you reach the top of the trail, you will still need to find transportation to get to the airport and/or the only large town on Molokai, which are both about 10 miles from the trail head. This is a full-time TERM position. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed 13 months, with the possibility of incremental extensions up to a total of four years without further competition. This position is Subject to Periods of Non-Pay, and is expected to be placed in mandatory non-pay status for a minimum of 2 weeks to a maximum of 6 months each year. DUTIES: Back to top You work with the Museum Curator in the curatorial storage facility at Kalaupapa NHP: Identify, accession, catalog, label and process archives and objects within the museum collection. Prepare, maintain and organize curatorial records including accession records, catalog records and donation forms. Catalog objects according to professional museum standards. Maintain and update cataloging and databases. Please objects in storage. Perform routine records searches for information and research requests. Implement museum integrated pest management schedules and museum environmental monitoring. Occasionally assist field work related to general cultural resource inventories, conditions assessments, and stabilization. NOTE: Legislation provides that federal salaries in Hawaii will transition from base pay plus a cost-of-living allowance (COLA) to the locality pay-based system that applies in the 48 contiguous states. Locality pay will be phased in, and COLA will be phased out accordingly through annual reductions. Currently, the COLA pay in Hawaii is 12.25% with the exception of Hawaii island, which is 6.24%. The salary annotated on this announcement includes the locality, however, does not include the cost- of-living allowance. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Back to top To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by the closing date (Friday, August 21, 2015) of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Examples of qualifying specialized experience include collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years of undergraduate level education leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study or 24 semester hours of course work in art, history, museum studies, anthropology, or archaeo logy. -OR- Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours (or equivalent) earned towards a bachelor's degree, in excess of 60 semester hours, and divide by 60 semester hours (or equivalent). Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by the closing date (Friday, August 21, 2015) of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Examples of qualifying specialized experience include 1) preparing, maintaining, and organizing accession and catalog records by applying collections management procedures for museum (or similar) objects; 2) locating, retrieving, and obtaining information related to museum collections; 3) using database software and applications to generate reports, charts, and summaries relevant to museum collections; and 4) using digital equipment and software to document artifacts and collections. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full academic year of graduate level education, 18 semester hours (or equivalent) from an accredited institution in a related field. Acceptable fields of study are: art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled. -OR- Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours (or equivalent) earned towards a graduate degree and divide by 18 semester hours (or equivalent). Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. -OR- SUPERIOR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT (SAA): successful completion a bachelor's degree in a related field (as mentioned in "B" above) AND meeting one of the following provisions: (1) A grade point average of B (a GPA of 3.0 or higher) for all completed undergraduate courses, or those completed in the last 2 full years of undergraduate study; OR (2) A grade point average of B (a GPA of 3.5 or higher) for all courses in your major field of study, or those courses in your major completed in the last two years of undergraduate study; OR (3) Rank in the upper one-third of your class in the college, university, or major subdivision; OR (4) Membership in a national honor society (other than freshman honor societies) recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies. To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Probationary Period: If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. Incidental Driving: You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Relocation: Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will be paid if the selectee lives outside of the local commuting area and is otherwise eligible for reimbursement of relocation expenses in accordance with the Federal Travel Regulation. Work Schedule: You may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. Travel: You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per month.
