Director of Research and Instructional Services University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Chapel Hill, North Carolina The Director of Research and Instructional Services provides vision and strategic direction for research and instructional services in the humanities, social sciences, global and area studies, and the arts at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Libraries. Reporting to the Deputy University Librarian, the Director leads thirty library professionals and support staff in engaging with faculty and students in designing and implementing pedagogically appropriate instruction for library users and providing in-depth, specialized research consultation, reference, and collection development. The Director encourages the exploration and adoption of new approaches to research, instruction, and outreach to students and faculty and, collaborating with staff throughout the Libraries, assumes a leadership role in identifying and implementing emerging technologies and incorporating best practices into research and instructional services. The Director fosters an open, collaborative environment and sets high user-centered service standards. Along with the Deputy University Librarian, the Director of Public Services, and the Director of the Health Sciences Library, the successful candidate will help to develop the vision and services for the Libraries' Research Hub, in support of interdisciplinary, data-driven, digitally reliant, and team-based research. The Director will also serve as a subject specialist in an area suited to her or his academic background and interests. In this role, the librarian will serve as primary liaison to an academic department or program; provide in-depth, specialized research consultation and instruction; and develop and manage collections in relevant formats and languages. **Qualifications REQUIRED **Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: ALA-accredited master's degree in library or information science or advanced degree in a humanities or social science field. At least seven years of progressively responsible professional experience providing research and instructional services in an academic library or higher education environment. Demonstrated use of the applications of new technology in research, teaching, and learning. Demonstrated initiative and proven ability to learn new technologies and develop innovative solutions to complex problems. Proficiency with information resources in a variety of formats and subject areas. Knowledge of collection development principles, practices, and vendor systems. Evidence of strong supervisory and team management experience and skill. Demonstrated ability to support, mentor, and develop library professionals and staff as well as to work with diverse groups within the Libraries and across campus. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills. **PREFERRED** Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Experience in writing and managing innovative grant projects. Fund-raising and donor relations skills. Significant contributions to the profession of librarianship, including publications, presentations, or leadership in professional or scholarly organizations at the national or international level. **The University and The Libraries** The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the country's oldest state university.
