**Job Summary**  
  
HathiTrust Digital Library has an opportunity for a collaborative, creative,
and service-focused individual to expand and enhance access to US Federal
Documents and other significant collections. HathiTrust is a growing
partnership of research and academic libraries that are working together to
ensure permanent access to the record of human knowledge. Founded in 2008,
HathiTrust includes more than 110 members worldwide, who together support a
certified trusted digital repository holding 13.7 million digitized volumes,
including 6.8 million unique titles and 640,000 US federal documents. The
HathiTrust Research Center, based at the University of Illinois, Urbana-
Champaign and Indiana University, develops and offers services supporting
advanced computational research using the HathiTrust collections. The US
Federal Documents Initiative is one of several that HathiTrust members have
endorsed as a key strategic program. This is an ideal position for a candidate

The Program Officer for Federal Documents and Collections (PO) has primary
responsibility for planning, organizing, and executing the HathiTrust US
Federal Documents Initiative. The PO will oversee the expansion of the federal
documents collection and services that support their discovery, access, and
preservation. The PO will work closely with the HathiTrust
membership, federal agencies, vendors, and depository libraries, and the wider
library community to develop and promote the Initiative.
Key activities will include analysis of the Federal Documents Registry and
existing HathiTrust collections, the identification of source collections for
digitization and recruitment of participating libraries, and development of
new access services for federal documents in the HathiTrust collection.

  
Note: This is a three-year position at the University of Michigan that will
report to the Executive Director. The Program Officer is an
employee of the University of Michigan, and operates within the rules and
policies of the University of Michigan. Relocation to Ann Arbor, MI is
desirable but not required.

  
**Job Responsibilities**

  * Plans and executes major activities supporting the US Federal Documents Initiative, including oversight of the Federal Documents Registry project, the development of a collection development agenda, and the development of collections-specific services.
  * Forges partnerships with consortia, government agencies, publishers, and/or other organizations and vendors to achieve the goals of the initiative.
  * Analyzes characteristics of the collection of federal documents in HathiTrust and their usage to identify service enhancements.
  * Develops materials, presentations, training programs, or other services to ensure that the collections are readily used by researchers and the public.
  * Works closely with or leads relevant HathiTrust governance and advisory groups, especially the Federal Documents Initiative Planning and Advisory Group, to align HathiTrust activities with the needs of users, members, and the broader community.
  * Formally represents HathiTrust in multiple forums to advance the Initiative.
  * Participates as needed in related HathiTrust efforts such as metadata development and publication, quality assurance, collection analytics, user experience, shared print archiving, or other topics.
  * May supervise staff and interns working on the Initiative.
  
**Required Qualifications**  

  * An ALA-accredited master's degree or equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience.
  * Knowledge of current issues and trends in library collection development, management, and access methods, including digital libraries.
  * Knowledge of the corpus of US federal publications, including those found in existing library collections and currently published electronically by the federal government.
  * Demonstrated ability to form successful partnerships across complex organizations involving diverse stakeholders.
  * Experience working in and/or leading successful cross-functional teams within an organization or as a virtual organization across multiple organizations.
  * Record of creativity, innovation, and problem solving in execution of previous jobs.
  * Capable of clear and persuasive communication with a variety of stakeholders.
  * Evidence of ability to gather, analyze, and interpret data, and to clearly and concisely report the results to multiple audiences.
  * Exceptional service orientation, including a commitment to services for users from diverse backgrounds with different needs and abilities.
  * Understands and values diversity and the importance of inclusion as demonstrated through a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization.
**Desired Qualifications**

  * Willingness and ability to relocate to Ann Arbor, MI.
  * Experience in related areas such as repository management, digital preservation, discovery services, large scale digitization, metadata management, project and process management.

Appointment is anticipated as an academic and/or research program officer, or
an associate or senior associate librarian. Salary and rank are dependent on
the candidate's qualifications and experience. Librarian appointments carry
with them increased expectations regarding professional development,
professional engagement, research, and service, in keeping with the library's
process for librarian promotion and advancement.

This position receives 24 days of vacation a year, and 15 days of sick leave a
year with provisions for extended benefits, as well as opportunities for
