Metadata & Digital Collections Librarian


·         Researches, recommends, designs, and implements appropriate metadata standards and schema for discovery and access of digital collections, maintains best practices and procedures, and helps create policy. Will be expected to research and learn new and relevant technologies on an ongoing basis.

·         Develops workflows for metadata (descriptive, technical, administrative, preservation, etc.) including improvements to automation across applications, and supports greater system interoperability by conducting transformations/crosswalks.

·         Hires, supervises, and manages the workflow for students in descriptive metadata creation.

·         Supports sustainable and scalable metadata practices, including managing clean-up projects and designing functionality for batch creation of metadata.

·         Works with digital repository and digital asset management systems to support ingest and publishing; supports Digital Projects Lead in general digital collections project management and daily workflows.

·         Administers current systems that manage metadata (Archivist’s Toolkit/ArchiveSpace, CONTENTdm); supports migration to new systems.

·         Serves as principle liaison to Archives and Special Collections department in support of archival digital collection development and metadata, including electronic records management.

·         Consults and communicates effectively with internal and external stakeholders on digital collections development and digital initiatives.

·         Works closely with Associate Director of DnA, Head of Archives and Special Collections, and Digital Library Applications Manager on digital preservation readiness for Mount Holyoke College digital assets.

·         Keeps abreast of new trends, tools, opportunities, and campus needs. Contributes to a continuous process of assessment to ensure the DAPS Department’s success in advancing the College’s evolving goals in light of pedagogical, information, and technology changes. Assists the Associate Director of DnA in identifying, planning, and implementing the best solutions for Mount Holyoke.

·         Serves as member of the DAPS team and works collaboratively to plan and achieve LITS Division goals and priorities, participates in College and Five College committees, and engages in other professional activities related to the duties of the position.

·         Ensures compliance with professional and technology standards, license and regulatory requirements, and MHC standards, policies, and procedures.

·         Maintains a high level of quality customer service standards responding to questions and problems. Actively works with colleagues in LITS to create a welcoming and user-centered environment in which a diverse population of student, faculty, and staff can thrive.

·         Develops strong working, collaborative partnerships within LITS, with the College community, Five Colleges, and others to proactively identify, recommend, facilitate, and implement appropriate and effective policies, services, resources, support, and procedures that improve the ability of the College community to accomplish its teaching, learning, research, and administrative goals.

·         Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Skills:


·         MLS or other relevant advanced degree.  One-two years of experience, preferably in an academic or archival setting. Recent Master’s graduates with appropriate experience are encouraged to apply.

·         Experience in managing and maintaining metadata with consideration given to candidates with database experience (management, querying, reporting). Experience with standards-based non-MARC metadata schemas such as Qualified Dublin Core, MODS, METS, and EAD is required. Experience creating, manipulating, and transforming XML using XSL/XSLT or other scripting methods is highly desirable.

·         The candidate must demonstrate an appreciation for the work of archives and/or other cultural heritage collections, and a general understanding of principles and practices; experience with, or training in, an archives environment is highly desired.

·         Familiarity with digital repository/digital collections systems and/or platforms for publishing digital content. Knowledge of strategies for digital object creation and preservation standards.  Interest in learning and implementing linked open data and semantic web standards.

·         Excellent oral and written communication, organization, and problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Some experience overseeing students is desired.

·         Creativity, with a passion for supporting a collaborative work environment. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of faculty, students, administrators, staff, and others.

·         Maintain a professional and tactful approach in all interactions, ensuring confidentiality and an individual’s right to privacy regarding appropriate information.

·         Flexibility to accept, manage and incorporate change and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously and effectively in a fast-paced environment.

·         Ability to travel as needed to participate in consortia and professional meetings and events.

·         Enthusiastic service orientation with sensitivity to the needs of users at all skill levels; the ability to convey technical information to a non-technical audience is essential.
