**Position Title Principal Software Engineer**  
  
**Department Information**  
The Enterprise Scholarly Systems (ESS) is a new team based in UITS Enterprise
Systems to support production digital scholarly information management
services for use across the university, to be developed and supported in
collaboration with IUB Libraries and IUPUI University Library.

  
Primary stakeholders for these services will be libraries, archives, museums,
and the IU Office of Scholarly Publishing, but faculty and academic school-
and department-based projects may also make use of these services to create
and manage digital content of long-term value in research, teaching, and
learning.

  
**Job Summary**  
Responsible for collaborating, leading, and ensuring the successful delivery
of critical components of Enterprise Systems serving the faculty, staff, and
students at all campuses of Indiana University. Many of these systems require
continuous operation/high availability and 24 X 7 support.

  
Organizes and owns initiatives to analyze functional business processes,
determine system specifications, design solutions, write software, and
implement critical system applications while maintaining standards and high
quality. Oversees other applications administrators and developers to resolve
complex technical issues. Responsible for ensuring established standards are
followed and that the latest versions of the software infrastructure are being
used, as well as ensuring the applications take advantage of emerging
functionality that increases technical productivity or provides value added
new services.

  
Collaborates with functional business clients and other teams within the
central information technology organization. Develops and maintains excellent
relationships with all of these groups through careful consideration and
thorough communication on analysis and programming assignments.

  
Works independently as a senior member of the team and maintains excellent
relationships with functional and technical members of the team, through
careful consideration and thorough communications on analysis and programming
assignments. Demonstrates initiative, creativity, and innovation in the
development of stable, maintainable, and efficient computing solutions. Works
as an effective leader on the team providing training, guidance, and mentoring
to less experienced staff.

  
**Required Qualifications**  
REQUIRED: Bachelor's degree in computer science, business systems, or related
discipline and five years of professional experience working as an application
administrator or engineer using the standard Enterprise Systems development
tools and frameworks.

  
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.

  
Expert knowledge of Enterprise Systems standard development tools and
frameworks; experience working with enterprise-scale software development; and
understanding of common design patterns, service-oriented architecture, test-
driven development, and agile methodology. Demonstrable skill in analyzing
complex problems and producing concrete, actionable solutions, specifically as
it pertains to production troubleshooting; and experience resolving highly
complex integration issues involving multiple technologies and business areas.

  
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal including
a customer service attitude and ability to work with a variety of people with
varying degrees of technical knowledge. Willingness to work as part of a team
in a dynamic and complex environment; and ability to assume project leadership
for ES projects and work at the highest level of technical complexity. High
levels of accuracy, problem-solving, dependability, and responsibility; and
enthusiasm for learning new technologies.

  
**Preferred Qualifications**  
Working knowledge of Hydra repository framework and XML or RDF-based library
metadata standards; experience with the following: library digital repository
systems; administering Fedora repository environment; developing or
maintaining web applications using Ruby on Rails.

  
**Working Conditions / Physical Demands**  
Must be able to work on-call and after hours as needed as many of the systems
require continuous operation/high availability and 24 X 7 support.
