Job Vacancy: Director of IT Operations - Data to Insight Center, Pervasive Technology Institute, Indiana University

The Data to Insight Center, a member center of the Pervasive Technology Institute at the Indiana University Bloomington and the parent organization for the HathiTrust Research Center (HTRC), seeks applications for the position of Director of IT Operations.

Job summary: Serves in a lead DevOps role for the HathiTrust Research Center (HTRC), a collaborative of Indiana University, the University of Illinois, and the HathiTrust (University of Michigan) that enables computational analytical access to massive digital texts. Provides high-level technical and practical expertise, consulting, and management of IT systems and services. Ensures high availability of services. Architects new services and enhances current services on the current roadmap for HTRC success. Maintains and applies a significant depth of knowledge in many widely varied technology areas, including computing, security, data and high performance computing. Directs the technical activities of the HTRC tech team members on a day-to-day basis; contributes to HTRC systems architecture design; provides technical guidance to HTRC systems administration; and contributes to other supervisory activities. Develops and maintains contacts across the HTRC partnership as well as with internal systems groups at IU (Research Technologies, Enterprise Systems). Performs high-level analysis of complicated technical and data architectures to identify and address security vulnerabilities and compliance in collaboration with the IU UISO (University Information Security Office).

Additionally, serves in a broader leadership role as an Associate Director of the Data to Insight Center, providing primary technical contact for IT groups at the School of Informatics and Computing, IU UITS and Research Technologies, and IU UISO.

REQUIRED (Combinations of related education and experience may be considered):

• Bachelor’s degree and six years of advanced IT systems analysis, programming or administration experience.
• Two years of computer services management for an enterprise or research-related IT operation and two years of experience in development, administration, and maintenance of IT systems.
• Very strong skills in software development, prior experience in leading an agile software development project and service as a Scrum Master or Product Owner.
• Experience in IT policy development. Experience with Java (preferred), Python or other programming language.
• Experience with NoSQL graph databases such as MongoDB, Cassandra.
• Advanced technical background and skills in web and computational services, systems architecture, and administration.
• Ability to work with complex matters that involve technology, human behavior, politics, communications, and persuasion.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, ability to interact with a diverse group of individuals with varied levels of understanding and authority within customer institutions.
• Ability to clearly and effectively document the areas of primary responsibility within the HTRC.

PREFERRED:

• Degree in computer science.
• Demonstrated knowledge of computational analytics, including work with text analysis and or secure computational enclaves.
• Extensive experience in Web information and application delivery.
• Ability to apply security tools, audits and protocols to secure data systems.
• Experience with one or more relational database systems.
• Experience in a university-based technology environment.

OTHER: Preference is for employment location in Bloomington IN, however, depending on particulars of the candidate a telecommuting arrangement may be acceptable.
