Librarian (Digital Curation)
District Of Columbia Public Library
Washington, D.C.

Under the general direction of the Special Collections Manager, the Digital
Curation Librarian is primarily responsible for managing digitization for the
Library's unique and historical materials and curating digital content.

  
Key Job Responsibilities

  * Provide expertise on workflows, tools, and best practices to manage born-digital content.
  * Strategize, develop, and communicate policies and processes for creating accessions, processing, ingesting, and describing born-digital materials.
  * Coordinate outsourced digitization projects with vendors; implement internal quality checks for deliverables.
  * Develop efficient workflow models for in-house digitization and scan-on-demand services.
  * Develop online exhibits and programming to promote the digital special collections.
  * Advise the Special Collections Manager on issues related to the Library's digital assets management system (DAMS), the DAMS as it relates to the OPAC, and other discovery tools.
  * Stay apprised of current and future trends and technology for digital collections, cataloging, and digital preservation.
  * Provide customer service both virtually and in Special Collections' Reading rooms.
  * Evaluate proposed acquisitions of born-digital material with department selectors and advise on discovery and delivery options.
  * Work collaboratively with Library public service and outreach professionals on the appropriate presentation of born digital material for instructional and research use, and exhibits.
  * Trains staff, interns and volunteers on digitization tasks.
  * Research and develop grant proposals relating to digital collections.
  * Communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
Qualifications

  * Specialized training and experience in archives is preferred;
  * Specialized training and experience in digitization is preferred;
  * Knowledge of best practices for digital preservation and digital archives is preferred; and
  * Experience with relevant software and applications is preferred (i.e. XML, HTML, EAD, MARC, Dublin Core, Archival Management Software, CONTENTdm, and general open source software).
  
Education

A Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution is
required.

  
Work Experience

Experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge,
skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties and responsibilities
of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the
position to be filled.

  
Work Environment

The work is performed primarily in an office setting but also entails frequent
interaction in public service areas of the central library location (MLKML)
with colleagues and the public.
