Photo Digitization Internship

The United States Naval Institute is seeking two highly motivated and detail-
oriented individuals for a paid photographic digitization internship.

  
Founded in 1873, the U.S. Naval Institute is a private, non-partisan, member-
driven nonprofit whose mission is to provide an open, independent forum for
those who dare to read, think, speak, and write in order to advance the
professional, literary and scientific understanding of sea power and other
issues critical to national defense. USNI sponsors numerous seminars and
public events, maintains relevant blogs, publishes two magazines (Proceedings
and Naval History), and has served as the U.S. Navy's unofficial university
press, producing an entire library of professional books as well as
maintaining a significant presence in the trade publishing world.

  
**Learning Opportunities and Responsibilities**  
  
The Photo Digitization Interns will each commit 24 hours of work per week on-
site at the U.S. Naval Institute in Annapolis, Maryland. The interns will
learn about the care and management of a large archival photographic
collection and the process of digitizing photographs and ingesting their
associated metadata. The internship will take as its focus the Naval
Institute's collection of over 500,000 photographs. Under the supervision of
the Chief Digital Officer, the Manger of the Heritage Collection, and the
Digital Assets Administrator, the interns will assist in the preparation of
archival photographs for digitization and will capture and generate
descriptive metadata for he training received through these internships will
allow the successful interns to have a through understanding of the
digitization process and gain demonstrable experience working with image
metadata.

  
**Requirements**  
  
Enrollment in, or recent completion of, M.L.I.S. or similar degree with a
concentration in archival studies from an ALA-accredited program, or an
equivalent graduate degree in the fields of information science, records
management, or preservation.

Excellent attention to detail.

Ability to work both independently and under supervision.

Demonstrated ability to set priorities and meet strict deadlines.

Ability to pass a background check.

  
**Preferred Qualifications**  
  
Background or interest in metadata management and digital preservation
strongly preferred.

Interest in historical photographic preservation and care.

Interest in the history of the U.S. Navy or maritime history.

  
**Compensation**  
  
The Photo Preservation Interns will receive a compensation of $12.00 per hour.
