Dear NDSA Community,
It is now Spring. Already it has been a big year for the National Digital Stewardship Alliance, and the next nine months promise much more. In partnership with our new host, the Digital Library Federation, NDSA has renewed its public face, streamlined the membership process, welcomed a number of new members to the organization, and launched community projects. We are writing to provide an update on events and activities, and to call for your participation in NDSA leadership, activities, and events.
At the beginning of the year NDSA renewed its public presence and communications:
The new NDSA Website (http://ndsa.org) has been released, presenting information about the organization, membership, resources, and activities.
The community wiki has been refreshed and made newly open to for public view (https://wiki.diglib.org/NDSA:Main_Page)
Community mailing lists have been updated, and are available for subscription (http://lists.clir.org)
Our Social Media channels, such as Twitter (@NDSA2) and various DLF feeds, are actively highlighting a stream of activities in the NDSA and digital preservation community.
Building on these improvements, membership applications and renewals are now being streamlined:
There is a new lightweight membership form available on the website (http://ndsa.diglib.org/get-involved/)
NDSA has welcomed seven new members this year: James Madison University; The Modern Language Association; Digital Bedrock; Digital Preservation Network; Gates Archive; Purchase College Library; and Bryn Mawr College, with several additional applications in the pipeline
Current members should have received calls to renew their contact information and reaffirm their commitment to NDSA’s values and principles.
The NDSA community is now leading a number of activities for this year:
The third Web Archiving survey successfully collected information organizations across the globe -- results will be presented later this year (https://blogs.loc.gov/digitalpreservation/2016/01/survey-how-do-you-approach-web-archiving/)
Digital Preservation 2016 (http://ndsa.diglib.org/meetings/) will be held November 9-10, in conjunction with the DLF Forum (November 7-9) in Milwaukee (https://www.diglib.org/forums/2016forum/). Many NDSA members have joined the program committee. CFPs for both #digipres16 and the #DLFforum are open until May 15th!
In conjunction with Digital Preservation 2016, we are planning to update the National Agenda for Digital Preservation; expect a call for participation later this spring.
The Innovation Working group has started planning for this year’s Digital Preservation Innovation Awards; and NDSA will, later this year, announce calls for nomination for the next series of Digital Preservation Pioneers.
New opportunities for leadership and participation.
Coordinating committee elections. Several members of the coordinating committee will be completing their terms this year. Expect a call later this month for nominations!
We are currently finalizing a model for streamlining the process for creating and participating in NDSA interest and working groups. If you have an interest in starting a group to discuss a new topic please feel free to e-mail NDSA-all or talk directly with a current working group coordinator.
The NDSA coordinating committee is developing a set of community guidelines and Code of Conduct. Expect a call for public input soon.
Call for working group coordinators. Several NDSA working group chairs have come to the end of their terms or will be rotating off shortly. We thank them for their service, and now invite volunteers to step forward to lead or join the leadership teams of any of our existing groups: http://ndsa.org/working-groups/ Feel free to contact existing chairs for more info.
We encourage everyone to submit proposals to Digital Preservation 2016; to join a Working Group as member or volunteer coordinator; and to nominate yourself or colleagues for the upcoming Coordinating Committee Elections. And if you haven’t already, please follow @NDSA2 on Twitter, put November 9-10 on your calendar for Digital Preservation 2016, and send your updated contact information to ndsa@diglib.org.
Very Best,
Micah Altman & Bethany Nowviskie
On behalf of the NDSA Coordinating Committee
